Flex 4 application in less than 2 minutes

I just uploaded the shortest tutorial that I have ever done. Using the new data features in Flash Builder 4 I create a Twitter search application from scratch in less than 2 minutes. I have done this example before using Catalyst but this shows just how quickly you connect your applications to external data sources. The data services wizard now has an XML choice that makes parsing feed data a piece of cake.

Mini Flex 4 User Group Tour

I will be presenting at a couple of user groups as part of the Flex 4 launch. First I will be presenting to the great folks at FlashCodersNY on Thursday, April 1st. The second will be a Flex 4 Happy Hour at the Las Vegas Flash User Group that I will be co-presenting with Kevin Hoyt. This event is at an Irish pub so the beer will flow. Both of these sessions will cover all of the new features that are in the Flex 4 framework as well as in Flash Builder 4. I will also be raffling several copies of Flash Builder as well. The event details are below.

New tutorial on Flash Builder 4 data integration

I just finished uploading a new tutorial that shows how easy it is to integrate server-side data into your Flex 4 applications using Flash Builder 4. In the example I display results from the Twitter search API in a datagrid without having to write a single line of code. These new features make it incredibly easy to connect to things like ColdFusion, ZendAMF, LiveCycle DS, etc. Definitely one of my favorite Flash Builder 4 features.

Flex 4 Black Ops skin

I’ve spent the last couple of days getting up to speed with skinning in Flex 4. All I can say is that it is much easier than it was before. You can see my first skin release below which I am calling Black Ops. I started out in Illustrator drawing the basic shapes and then moved to Flash Catalyst to skin the button and scrollbars. I created the rest of the skins using Flash Builder 4. You can view source on the Flex application below or download the FXP skin file to start using it. I only skinned a small segment of the components but feel free to build on what I did.

Two-part tutorial on Flash Catalyst and Flex 4

I just finished uploading two new tutorials on using Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder 4. The first public betas of the these tools just went live tonight and these tutorial will get you up and running in no time. They show you how to build a nicely designed Twitter search application starting with an Illustrator design comp. I have to say that I’m really excited about Flash Catalyst as it makes creating skins for Flex a piece of cake.
