Update: I will be selecting certain questions from the list to answer in each episode as I think there will be quite a large list. Also remember to leave your geographic location if you don’t mind. Also, really technical questions like requests for actual code snippets will not lend themselves very well to this medium.

I’m going to try a new video experiment that I’m simply calling Just Ask Us. The concept here is very simple. Leave your questions for Adobe and/or myself in the comments of this post and I will go off and find the answers for you. Then I will record a video hopefully giving you the answers you’re looking for.
You can ask questions about anything you like. Now of course there will probably be some questions that I can’t answer but I’ll at least try to give the reasons why I can’t. When you leave your questions it would be great if you could include your name and geographic location but that is totally optional.
I will accept questions until this Friday (07/31) at 5:00 PM (California time). We’ll see how this little experiment goes but I think it could be a cool way to get your questions answered on the record.

What’s the best way to debug/profile a Flash/Flex/AS3 application? I’m looking for precise processor usage, in particular, but what other criteria should I have in mind? How would I know if I have no memory leaks and no useless processor usage?
Here’s a few

Hi Lee,
I think this is a very good initiative and I hope you’ll get a lot of interesting questions. I hope mine is.
I was wondering about Flash Catalyst and it’s current features. As a Flex developer I’m probably going to use Catalyst to produce an application from a given design. And then I’ll hook it up to a backend of some sorts. But designs tend to change, so will there be a possibility of roundtripping between Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst in the final version (I know it’s not possible for the moment)? I think this would be a crucial aspect for the product…
Thanks,
Steven
This is more of a question for you Lee, rather than Adobe as a company:
As an evangelist, do you still get a chance to work on “real world” Flash/Flex projects from time to time? Or is most of your work geared towards pushing the Flash Platform and finding out what people do/don’t like about it? If so, do you miss the days of working at places like Frog?

Great idea. Couple off the top of my head:
1. What steps is Adobe taking with the Flash Player to make sure it performs better than Silverlight? (Talking resource usage, hardware acceleration)
2. Besides the full version of the Flash Player being supported on ‘devices’, what does Adobe/You feel the best new feature will be for the next player version.
3. There was a video talking about possible multi-touch support in the Flash Player, can we get any more info about possible support? For example, is there any chance gesture support could be built in?
4. Anything new with Alchemy?
Google is releasing Chrome OS, is there any chance that adobe wants to release Adobe OS that runs an OS on top of the flash/air runtime?
this would make RIA’s more powerful. Or is there any chance Adobe is going to make a deal with google such that Chrome OS is going to come bundled with Air Runtime pre-installed, as Chrome OS is really targeted towards netbook users that want to spend alot of time with cloud app/services.
Sydney, Australia.
Thanks for the opportunity, Lee, this is very cool.
Here are my questions:
What have Adobe learned from the relatively poor sales and adoption rate of CS4 (compared to previous releases), and how do they plan to remedy this with the release of CS5? How do Adobe plan on winning back customers so disillusioned with CS4 that they never upgraded from CS3?
Because of the economic climate and the fact that there was much disappointment with CS4, do Adobe have any plans to sell CS5 for more reasonable and cheaper amount?
With the advent and popularization of CSS/XHTML and Web standards in general etc…, where does this leave Flash as far as Web site development is concerned? Do Adobe still think that people will be using Flash to build Web sites in 5 – 10 years time?
A very boring and predictable question, but a slight twist to it nonetheless, but who needs who, more? Does Apple need Flash (Player) on the iPhone (to gain access to the most popular distribution and presentation method of video on the Web) more than Adobe needs Flash Player on the iPhone? Also, how would having Flash Player available on the iPhone affect iPhone apps as we know them today?
How seriously does Adobe take SilverLight as a competitor?
What ever happened to FlashPaper? Does it have any future?
Regarding the critical zero-day vulnerability of Flash Player that hit the headlines last week, why wasn’t this fixed a lot sooner considering Adobe knew about it back in December?
Thanks again for the opportunity to pose questions.

What do you think is the best 3D API for Flash? This includes performance, documentation, and ease of use. Away3D, Papervision3D, Sandy, or some other one?
Ed,

What do you consider to be the best/worst examples of sites or sites’ components that are best made without flash, but just as regular html/js/css? And vice versa?
Don’t you think the players’ vector renderer needs a good revamp? We kind of know why the renderer has undergone little change through time (as far as I remember its workings were regarded to be quite an enigma and you didn’t want to fix something that wasn’t broken), but by now it has become the main bottleneck of Flash. Why not update a piece of software that was written quite some time ago? That would break some serious new ground for the platform.
How can I authenticate securely with an AIR application (Oauth-as3 or Crypto?) without the use of certain Adobe server products (while customers not always want to invest)?
This is a question about how to secure communication between a Flash client (player or AIR) and the server, with the remark that also corporate networks need to use this (so no certain ports being used to authenticate).
Idealy it would be nice to have a secure token being saved in an EncryptedStore, so you don’t need to always fill in your username/password when you login.
Thnx & a good initiative!

I have a few questions regarding the 3D Flash and 3D Physics engines
This one is same as the one already asked by @Ed Moore but I would like to add one more into the list – Which one among PV3D, Away3D,
Sandy 3D and Alternativa is the best 3D engine in terms of performance, ease of coding and documentation.
Which one is the best 3D Physics Engine – WOW 3D, Jiglibflash or is any other better alternative available.
Some advance tutorials on 3D Flash and Physics 3D engines would
really help.

What new features are coming up in Flash Player 11 and Flash Player mobile edition? We’ve heard that FP Mobile will have multi-touch and accelerometer support – but will this be rolled out to Flash Player and AIR?
Great idea! here’s mine:
Are there any effords to improve the workflow between the Flash IDE and Flash Builder for Flash Proyects (not Flex)? is the new FLA format (XFL) going to help with this?
If not, are you thinking on improving the Flash IDE code editor, or at least make it extensible?
Lee I hope you don’t mind me going off topic here.
I read Scotts post above with interest. I’m about to upgrade four bundle copies of CS3 to CS4. On what basis are people “disillusioned with CS4″?
I’m obviously not up to speed on the communities opinion of CS4 and tend to just upgrade automatically but given the fact that cash is king more than ever is there something I need to know about CS4 that would be a cause for concern?
I’ve googled for reviews on CS4 and can’t find any bad ones as yet.
1) what has faster execution, dispatching a custom event or calling a method directly ?
2) Is there a limitation to the number of events that can exist on a single sprite or a limitation to the number of events that can exist inside the entire flash application.
3) how does the event dispatching mechanism inside the flashplayer work? … so how are event names mapped to function pointers.

Someone has to ask this, it might as well be me. I would love to have a clear and honest explanation of Adobe’s global pricing policy. How can you justify charging twice as much in some territories for the same product?
HI Lee,
I just starting out in flex coming from a flash environment and I want to know the best technique for using movie clips in my flex project;
For example if I made an interactive animation or even just a nice button.
(I’m from Ireland BTW)
I would like to know penetration statistics for the Flex framework RSLs. This would make it far easier to make decisions about when it is acceptable to use Flex, and would make it far easier to ‘sell’ Flex to customers who are frankly confused by the mis-branding of it (I have to explain time and time again that Flex doesn’t require a special plugin or any downloads other than fp).
Whenever this topic comes up, Adobe’s line is that they don’t have a way of trapping the stats. This is quite obviously rubbish. Even if the stats aren’t impressive, it would be very helpful to us to know this so that we aren’t making decisions blindly.

This is a great Lee,
What does Adobe plan in regards in Flex Builder / Flash Builder on Linux? Many of us who develop on Linux are still using an alpha of Flex Builder 3 that expires in 120 days…
Will AIR support the ability to launch native applications?
If AIR will do that, would Adobe be willing to partner with interested developers to produce an open-source programmer centric IDE to go along with the open-source SDK?
The above idea would solve the questions around Linux support, and also produce an lite developers IDE for Mac, Windows and (later) Smartphones and Netbooks when AIR can run on those platforms also.
Please find an answer for the poor linux users! I’m midway though finding my old windows CD’s to install into Ubuntu so I can virtualise my way into running FlashDevelop in order to continue writing flash / air app’s alongside the rest of my development tools…. We’re getting desperate out here!

Can you tell us how to control caching on a swf file. This could be that you never want the swf to cache, or you want it to expire after a period of time – would be very useful!
Adobe has shown great support to Opensource and now it is even possible to develop AS projects without even touching an Adobe tool. Will this remain so, or will there be a policy change which makes future features which require the Flash IDE/Flash Builder or others. AS3 has evolved due to acceptance by masses and developers who mainly use non-adobe ides for development. Does adobe see this as a good thing? Or are there measures going to be taken to control this?
Lee, great idea, hope alot comes from this and it becomes a regular thing

Method Overloading, is there any chance of this in the next AS3 (AS4) revision? It would be such a nice addition

It would be nice to see things such as tables and a little more CSS control, is this likely?
How would you suggest handling secure transactions such as the sending of sensitive data ie: credit card numbers within a Flash or AIR Application? Is Flash / AIR already secure enough to handle this or are there potential weaknesses?

Hi Lee,
great initiative ! Here my question:
Will there be a better round-tripping from flex to flash in the future ?
So an easy way of using or importing flex components into flash. I know, the other way around is easy.
I would love to hear something about that.

Hi Lee, great idea.
Why is there no mouse wheel support for Mac out of the box? There are various fixes out there but it’s a real pain. It seems to have been resolved in Air but even in the Flash CS4 IDE there’s no support.
Cheers,
-T.
Hi Lee,
Excellent initiative!
My question is about Flash IDE and the it’s future. I’ve seen a lot of effort put in Flex SDK by Adobe, but the truth is, Flex SDK is not for Creative and rich websites and experiences, it’s more RIA targeted. So where is flash and flash ide going ? Because, it’s not the designers flash anymore, most designers stooped using flash after AS3 was introduced, it’s to complex for them, and it’s becoming a complete agony to work in flash ide, it’s full of annoying bugs, even if you use and external code editor.
Hi, Lee
Let me go straight…
1. Why Flash (IDE/FP) is so buggy while Apple software seems to have none? It’s crash all the time, can not render swf content/fault render even i get the lasted FP plugin, get stuck while right-click, compiles files very slow, cast silly errors… Will Adobe plan doing anything on stability improvements?
2. Why Flash is so slow compared to others like Torque3D, Unity3D? Will Flash be faster someday that can meet the performance of 3D applications like Piclens? Will Adobe plan doing anything on performance improvements? I know Flash is script and there is Adobe Alchemy but will flash natively faster (access directly to memory, faster loop, int, ByteArray, BitmapData…)?
3. What will Adobe do to make flash more accessible with fully keyboard suport on fullscreen mode (I know there is security problem, but you can show some overlay text tells that you are inside flash player while user is typing so user know they are not being cheat), better font/text support, give access to vector shape drawed on timeline, minimize the difficult trying to combine AS3 + Timeline work…
and many other things but that’s what i remember this time…
Given the growing competition to Flash from Microsoft, not to mention the evolving web standards like HTML, should/would Adobe consider completely open sourcing the Flash player in its entirety?
I really like the Tour de Flex app. Could we see an equivalent for Flash Professional – aka ‘Tour de Flash’?
There has been talk for some time about a Flash player for the iPhone. Do you have any information on if/when this will happen?
Hi,nice initiative.
But I warn you, I am no happy customer.
When can we expect a major break-throw with performance?
I am a flash games developer, and I have been waiting for this for a while now.
Google is going O3D, Silverlight has a DirectX acceleration…
So when will we really be able to use our computer resources?
Is OpenCL gonna be any good or just a little boost?
This is the major and only thing the community can’t do anything about, no matter the tweaks.
The integration also bother me.
I still can’t set the focus on my flash movie in Firefox on XP, this is ridiculous.
And it is a pain in the ass to go against some restriction like the forbidden right click.
Who, today, doesn’t have a mouse with two buttons?
And shouldn’t we still have the choice.
Anyway you don’t seem to care if the user doesn’t have any scoll wheel.
Any king of input should be allowed, including controllers.
It should be a feature of the flash player parameters utility (wich could use a makeover).
Also, when it comes to projects integration, a lot more of graphcal standards should be natively supported, such as loading TTF, SVG, COLLADA 3D…
These two points are the reason that despite the community making great stuff, Flash is a laughing matter (not for me, for “true developers”, the one with ties).
And seeing Adobe trying to put flash everywhere, selling us new tools like catalyst, creating new communication protocols…
If only Adobe would focus on listening the users and correct what is already there, making it a reliable technology it would be the biggest step ever!
Well, it turned out as a complaint…
Sorry about that, but the fact is that when you spend most of your awakened hours on a technology, you can hardly focus on the good stuff.
Let me turn that into 2 question:
- Is Adobe even listening to us, and how can we efficiently give our thoughts to it?
- When the f**k (whaou, where did those stars came from? The word was fuck, I was saying fuck) are we gonna see a major improvement?
PS: Ho, another question.
I really believe that games have been good for flash.
It is, in fact, one off the major reason people love flash in the end (when it comes to video, nobody even realize that the flash is at work).
Yet, I really feel that Adobe could hardly give less of a crap.
Not only they don’t make any effort in that direction in the features, but I don’t think I have ever seen them promote a game.
Like they kinda want to deny this use, to look more mature.
Am I paranoiac?
Has Adobe ever consulted flash game developers?
PPS: Another one, while I’m here.
Why isn’t there an auto-updater in the flashplayer.
One that could, depending on the situation, update on a background task anytime (for minor bugs) or prompt a message of update to the user for major bugs and when the swf is targeting another version.
That would allow developers to care less about version and aim directly to the last features.
Hi,
Very good initiative.
Here are my questions:
- Do adobe plan to release the flash player actionscript runtime (aka tamarin) and flash player’s multimedia/data/network libraries as independent cgi module? (server-side AS3 on both apache or IIS, mail-server scripts, etc)
- What will Adobe do in response to the increasing popularity of Unity3D? Planning any built-in 3D engine? Hardware acceleration? I suppose interpreted engines will never meet game/business-applications requirements.
3 Questions actually
1. What is the reasoning behind the new character panel? There is no more faux bold, italic, etc, without resorting to AS. Also, what is the reasoning to adjusting the fonts to be in their native language this version as opposed to previous?
2. Is Adobe planning for a 64-bit release this version of Flash or next?
3. Will Adobe ever be releasing the Flash editor on Linux platform?
I hope these questions are in the vein of what you are looking for. If not sorry to bother
Sorry. One more final question.
What does the Adobe/Google relationship look in terms of search-ability right now?
1. Is Adobe and the Flash team scared of HTML5?
2. Does Adobe have a timeline in place for ceasing support of Actionscript 1/2?
3. Will the Flash IDE ever get a code editor that doesn’t suck?
4. Can we expect future iterations of the Flash Player to have lower level hardware acceleration?
5. Does Adobe have any plans/suggestions on giving developers the ability to prevent SWFs from being decompiled?

What is the future of Adobe Director, is it safe to say that this product has been usurped by Flash and will be binned within the next two years?
Hi !
By seing more and more astonished Javascript demonstrations, I’m wondering if in 2 or 3 years Javascript won’t be a better choice than Flash. What is the point of view of Adobe on this question ?
Will Flash still worst it in the future ? Does Adobe plan to improve the performances of the plugin ?
1. Will the inverse kinematics classes be added to the Flex SDK?
2. [SWF (width="800", height="600", frameRate="60", backgroundColor="#000000", pageTitle="MyTitle")] ..are there any more parameters e.g. name of the SWF file?
I take it you’re being ironic with the logo style or something?

Lee, the idea for answering the questions in a video is absolutely great ! My first :
1. As I, there are thousands of freelancers in the world that really loves Flash Platform. Most of our money comes from these jobs and I would like to know what would be your advise on how to increase it (here´s an ugly seller). What would be a fair price for a small site in Flash/Flex or a small Air application ? What countries are demanding more of these jobs ? For us, Flash is pure fun, living of it is an amazing thing ! I know you perfectly understand what I´m telling you
2. I´m curious about where you search for new Flash technologies (excluding Adobe for sure), API´s, design tips, etc. I´m ever hungry for learning more. Maybe you don´t care about sharing part of your bookmarks with us
For now, I´m done. I know there will be more chances to ask you things, as this experiment will be a fully success. And thanks for all you´ve been doing for Flash
Here is one that has made me question if I am doing things correctly.
I use the Flex eclipse plugin to do most of my Flash projects. The problem is, say I have a movieclip in my flash library with some clips or dynamic textfields in it, if I access those objects in my class I get the “red problems x” in flex builder. I assume that is because there is no introspection into the .fla. Do I have to go and declare each of those variables in the class, in order to get rid of the “x” or am I setting the project up incorrectly?
PS it runs correctly, just don’t like red x’s
Will you be able to travel in time and teleport yourself in Flash CS5 with AS4 ???
’cause this is what flash doesn’t do yet!
A demo on doing flex/flash for the iphone, if/when it’s allowed by Apple.
Is there any more info or a timeframe about GPU accelerated Flash that you can give?
What happened to Flex Builder on Linux? Is there going to be a stable release some day? General: Is there a chance to see Adobe products on Linux in the future?
3. Will it be easy to update the Flash Player of the HTC Hero? I heard it’s built into the phone’s ROM.
I just want to enforce Scott’s question (above):
“Regarding the critical zero-day vulnerability of Flash Player that hit the headlines last week, why wasn’t this fixed a lot sooner considering Adobe knew about it back in December?”
and want to mention that the “quietness” of all of your evangelists etc. on blogs, Twitter etc. about this issue is sort of “curious” – isn’t it?
I work with a lot of .NET people who are all about SilverLight (eww). My question is regarding the future of Flash/AIR/FlashBuilder development and how you think it will hold up against competing software like SL? With what I’ve seen so far with FlashBuilder and Catalyst and the tons of awesome AIR apps being created, I don’t see it going anywhere, I see it getting bigger and better at a rapid pace.
So in short, do the people at Adobe have concerns about competing software and the fact that software using the .NET framework might be more appealing to some clients or companies? Or are you guys at Adobe just going to continue kicking ass?
Because that’s what I keep telling people.
Why does javascript animations and o3d framerate look so smooth! while in flash even if I tweak up the framerate it’s not that smooth. It’s something subtle with the flash framerate I dont like :/ hard question but, hehe
maybe an explanation why there’ even is a framerate settings and why the timeline isn’t measured in milliseconds/seconds.
I take the answer to my question off air, *click*
With the advent of Flash Player for smartphones, TV’s, etc. should we expect to start seeing different Flash Player versions for different devices or the tendency is for unification?
There have been rumors that Flash 10 mobile would be ready early October and that when it is released it would include multitouch capabilities as well as accelerometer support.
1. Can you support either of these rumors?
2. Will Flash 10 Mobile be separate than Flash 10 or will it be a single platform?
3. If they are separate… will Flash 10 gain the same multitouch capabilities? The main reason I ask is because of Multitouch installations and TVs… it would be nice to not have to use a Java 3rd party solution. Especially when Flash is making such a great push to become a staple on the TV platform.
Thanks,

1. How come Adobe has been pushing “Adobe Director” at professional game related conferences (e.g., at least the past 2 years at GDC) and kept Flash representation absent?
2. What is preventing the iPhone from having an AS3 capable Flash player? Political, technical, both; what are the concerns?
3. What is the time-line for multi-touch support in Flash?
4. What does Adobe “think” about the FlashDevelop project.
5. What is Adobe’s policy in locking out users to particular bugs who spend the time to set up a Jira account and document their findings? (e.g., I can no longer access my bug https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-21316 and no one has given me an explanation. )
6. When will Flash support joysticks / gamepads?
7. Will Adobe have representation in the newly created “IGDA FlashSIG”?

I have an unsexy question about Actionscript 4.0 (or whatever the next version will be called). What core structural features are being considered? I’m not talking about stuff like support for 3D or new video standards and the like (that’s the sexy stuff). I’m talking about things like constructor overloading (multiple constructors with different parameters), true abstract classes, multiple inheritance, precompiler macros, structs, etc?
It would be thrilling to have some sort of getter/setting synthesis, as exists for Objective-C.
Lee,
I have been using Flex builder for most of my AS3 Projects, and run into quite a few issues involving SVN. Mainly with bin-debug, and swcs. Can you go over the best way to set up an Actionscript Project for sharing with other developers and also maybe the best way to include an Asset swc to pull library items from at runtime?
Would be very helpful to see your approach on it.
Thanks a ton!

What are the future plans that Adobe has for the flash player considering the intense competition out there, not only from Silverlight which has come a long way very fast, but also from other web based plugins such as Unity. So many skilled Actionscript developers have turned to Unity as a platform recently, with its realtime 3D and also IPhone compatability. Do Adobe have any plans to integrate a realtime 3D engine into flash itself?
Why the flex remoteObject from the rpc swc in the flex3.2sdk is not working in an actionscript project ? is there a way to use the flex remoteObject in a pure actionscript project ?
Is there a way to ( “remove” “size” or “mouse disable”) from a flex component compiled in a swf and loaded into a flash project the invisible layer that extends to infinity from the registration of the loader holding the swf holding the flex component (ei: a flex tree) preventing user iteration with the layers underneath the flex component ?
Why do we in a flash project have an invisible layer that extends to infinity from the registration of the loader holding the swf holding the flex component (ei: a flex tree) preventing user iteration with the layers underneath the flex component and subsequently preventing “us” form using the flex component in a flash project ? is there a way around this ?
Is there a good UML tool that you know of for AS3 ?

Hi Lee,
I have some questions about Adobe customer service.
1. Recently I was to upgrade our software to CS4, but the online shop kept bringing me back to the 1. step, even after I’d entered my credit card info. This was of course very frustrating and I’ve been mailing Adobe for some time now, but they do not answer. This makes me think of Adobe support as the worst support team out there, when they can’t even take the time to answer a customer who has experienced a serious breakdown on the online shop. Is this the common workflow of your support?
2. I’ve been talking to the Adobe staff (USA, Sweden, Amsterdam & Denmark) over the past months, but the organization seems fragmented and unaware of the product lines eg. nobody knew anything about Kuler… How come you are so bad at knowledge-sharing across borders?
3. How come your phone support is the worst in the world? It takes forever to get through, and when you finally get a hold of a supporter, you are transferred immediately, resulting in more waiting time. Everytime I try calling Adobe, it takes at least 30 minutes to talk to the right person.
4. How come you don’t fix security bugs immediately instead of waiting 7 months?
I know this is more complaining than actual questions, but I’m pretty tired of your customer support.
Best regards,
Tue, Denmark
This is more of a question about a non existent feature I’m curious about.
Why isn’t adobe creating a font manager for the creative suite packagess? Will Adobe ever have a font manager built into Bridge to help ease activation of fonts for applications such as flash?
1. What is the difference between inserting swf into page with DreamWeaver CS4(SWFObject 2.2) and Flash CS4 (Publishing with F12)?
http://www.dntunion.ge/onReliaseOutside.txt
This sample script emulates “onReleaseOutside”, works fine in all Browsers if I published it with Flash CS4, but only in IE if I use DreamWeaver.
2. Why Adobe doesn’t makes swf object, like plugin for CS 4? Why can’t i install SWF object 2.3, and have to wait for CS5 with that function instead?

1) What is being done to ensure that Flash CS5 (and the rest of the suite) does not have as many show-stopping bugs upon release as CS4 did? Better, more extensive QA? A more through beta program?
Adobe’s reputation was damaged with the last release of what should be a solid platform by this point in the product’s lifespan, and before people will invest in CS5 they’ll want to know that they won’t have to wait five months for a massive bug fix update.
2) Are there any plans for further integration between Flex/Flash Builder and the Flash IDE (Flash Professional)? Flash Developers are still craving a better coding experience in the Flash IDE, even though we know you won’t be incorporating FB into the IDE anytime soon.
3) Any chance of AIR being able to launch external programs/commands on the ‘host’ system sometime soon?
Thanks, Lee!

Just a comment about Air: Marketplace authors, this runtime in conjunction with its As3 engine give us powers beyond compare. More powerful than rss readers, moon phase gadgets and desktop twitter apps. Think invention and innovation.

One that’s been bugging me lately is:
Why did Flash Player 10 have to introduce Loader.unloadAndStop(), to work around the buggy Flash Player 9 Loader.unload(), instead of just updating how Loader.unload() worked? If there had just been an update to the existing method, then everyone would have gotten the fix for free, without having to go back and change code.
Is there anything in the works for next Version of Flash to have better font handling? Maybe tools more along the lines of Illustrator.

When the flash player will benefit from “real” GPU acceleration? We will need to wait until the release of FP11? There’s any chance to have this in a FP10 update?

Will Adobe release Flash Builder 4 on Linux?
http://blog.tkassembled.com/2009/07/linux-flash-builder-4-will-adobe-help.html
Can flex or flash launch external files or executables this what let switch from developing flex and flash applications to blend and visual studio I hope find a way because I like all adobe things very much.
i’d like to have an xml driven site that uses an external css doc. i’ve tried numerous ways with varying, never complete, success. why does this constantly feel like pulling teeth? why does flash hate text?
Does Adobe intend to build an Adobe AIR API for interacting with computer preference/configuration settings. Ex: Screen resolution, Desktop-background?
Is it possible for the ‘Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.’ error message to include the object reference variable name?
Example: var ImNull:Sprite; trace(ImNull.width); (Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference: ImNull)
Is the multi-touch flashplayer going to be a separate plugin, or a new multi-touch API added to the full flashplayer?
Will the multi-touch flash-player be on the iPhone?
When, if ever, will Flash Lite be dropped, and merged into an optimized/adaptive single flashplayer? A flashplayer that automatically drops certain features depending on the platform it is running on, and doesn’t require separate development.
Does Adobe have any tools for observing the lifecycle of an app during runtime, monitoring garbage-collection, and time in memory per object, etc?

2- is it worth getting Flex certified a few months before the release of the new version
3- is Adobe afraid of Silverlight and what do they really think about it?

It seems the best method for leveraging PHP on the back-end and Flex on the front is ZEND’s AMF implementation.
How does that work if:
1. I want one back-end and several front-ends? For instance one flex front-end and one built on XHTML/CSS/AJAX as a non flash alternative? How do I communicate from ZEND’s AMF via XML or JSON so that my AJAX (spry for instance) can consume it?
2. What if I am hosting on a windows IIS server with limited access to configuration? How does the ZEND AMF installation work at that point? I could just drop in the AMFPHP.org version in a directory and be functional? What’s the new option?
Thanks for all the info you put out there.
Hey, this is awesome
I’m currently living in South New Jersey in the United States but I’m going up to Rhode Island for college in the Fall.
With hardware advances over the last decade or so how important is 3D in browsers in the decade to come?
It seems that more and more things are becoming web based. My alma mater high school just purchased a web based student management system. Obviously Adobe wants to make a great and easy to use suite, my question is does adobe plan to move in this direction at all?
Of course with a web based product it’s suggested that it’s more user friendly than it’s predecessors. My bigger question is are we going to still have a job in 10 years? (majoring in web and digital design) I’m terribly afraid of businesses and other firms buying a template and adding content in themselves, or for designing and development to be outsourced over seas.
Thanks for the time and chance to ask questions

If you have a non-trivial Flash IDE project with multiple classes, and you compile it twice in a row, the checksum’s do not match.
For example, create a new Flash AS3 project, import Tweener and animate something across the screen. Compile it once, rename the swf, compile it again, and compare the two swf’s. They will not match.
There seems to be less differences if you go into Publish settings and turn off Compression and turn off “Include XMP metadata”; however, they still will not match.
Why is this? Can it be fixed?
Hey Lee,
Here are some of my questions. I’m pretty sure they’re somewhat basic, but I might as well try and be part of your awesome initiative, one never knows.
1) How to create a User Session in Flash? I was thinking something in the lines of some basic login app, then a really basic user control panel, where the user can change its avatar and basic contact info, and finally an app where he/she can leave a comment so that we can see how to populate that. This sounds like the 3 in 1 package, eheh.
2) Maybe go a little deeper on PHP-XML-AS3, by creating a basic application, where you pretty much create the content (movie clips, placeholders, and such) and populate the XML data into that created content – instead of putting the data on to pre-made components.
3) How do you make a Background element – movieClip, image or video with whatever ration – scale proportionally with the browser?
4) How to create shapes with particle systems (?) ? Like that Audi web site. Is it with the Voxel engine?
5) This one might be a little lame but I believe that maybe a break from all the technical and development stuff might be interesting. What about a video explaining what your personal approach is to a new project. What do you do first? Where do you start? How do you plan your development? Stuff like that. Then again this might be your secret to success and sharing it might not be the smartest thing.
Just throwing ideas out there. Keep doing what you’re doing Lee, without wanting to sound cheesy, you really are a great asset to the community.

Some have asked recently about the legal aspects of selling adobe flash files in a commercial setting and releasing those same flash files for resale, the main problem is that there are several of these commercial vendors that do not have a commercial license to use adobe flash software products but yet they are selling files from pirated and non authorized versions of adobe, it is a concern due to the nature of legal proceedings in such matters.
Is Adobe planning on improving performance in the Flash Player any time soon?
Is it possible in CS5 to enable the Web Service panel when working in an AS3 fla? There is no reason it should be disabled, its just a panel that shows information. Having that tree display of my WSDLs is awesome, but a pain to have to switch to an AS2 document to use it.
Can you please let us override the trace() function? It could make debugging much more useful, and a lot less code to modify when done debugging.

1) CS4 for Win and CS4 for OS X are the same price. Why does adobe prevent a license holder from using a Mac for their laptop and a Windows box for their desktop for running CS4?
2) The Flash player is still not that great on OS X machines, though FP10 was a step in the right direction. In adobe presentaions that I’ve been to or seen the Adobe employee is using a macbook, so they are likely very aware of this. Is there a push to get this improved?

Hi,
I work on the flash platform for some months… I would like to see some more algorithms for 3D scripted animations.
All the things I have seen (I sure didn’t explore all google’s results) haven’t given me up sexy ideas…
I’m located in Liège, Belgium
Does Adobe currently intend to improve the range accuracy of the computeSpectrum method?
Will Adobe be releasing any updates to the Sound class that will make it easier to create Sound instances from ByteArray data? SAMPLE_DATA is neat, but still simply taking a ByteArray and creating a new Sound instance from it is tricky.
When will we have access to the microphone bytedata?
Thia is a very good idea, listen to the Adobe users
The two questions on my mind are already in the comments above. But here it goes:
1) future of Flash player vs. HTML5
2) what does Adobe do against other players, such as silverlight
Good luck answering all questions.

Will we ever be able to target audio that is placed on the timeline? Mainly for volume control? It’s so much easier to animate to audio placed on the timeline but sometimes you need to mute it dynamically based on a button press.
When Events get dispatched, are the ‘target’ and ‘currentTarget’ (or custom properties for that matter) weak or strong references ?

“Array assignment is by reference rather than by value. When you assign one array variable to another array variable, both refer to the same array” -Adobe LiveDocs

Hi
My question is:
Can flex be used for iPhone apps, and if it can, can it be used with a database support (mySQL/MSSQL) somewhere in the internet, to receive and broadcast data. Because I’ve seen couple apps build on flash, but I thinkk it would be a much easier and fun in Flex. Just imagine if the app has a Drag&Drop like interface, coas I’ve made one on Flash, but is like pain in the a**

Why isn’t there a JSFL or Eclipse plugin to test Flash flas from Flash Builder yet? I know you started something like this, [http://theflashblog.com/?p=482] but I can never get it to appear, let alone appear in Eclipse. You would think by Flash Builder 4 we’d have this in there by now. Thanks Lee!

1) Will Adobe publish and maintain a list of all mobile devices (and/or mobile operating systems) (with patch/firmware level) that support Flash (and make clear which version of this is, and if it’s ‘lite’, ‘half-lite’ (mobile opitmised ?) or full player ?
2) What on earth is this ‘mobile optimised’ mobile player about – what are the limits – where is the list of which Player 9/10 features are missing ? Will I be able to detect this in ActionScript or a JavaScript wrapper (like SWFObject) ?
3) What’s going on with Flash Builder for Linux – easily the most popular issue in Jira, but no comment from Adobe, and the Labs build expires shortly…
Will Apple ever allow the Flash Player on the iPhone?
When are we getting access to the Microphone class in order to do client-side recording?

Who do I speak to to get to be an AIR framework beta tester?
I’m pushing out a new AIR app on DVD (and web, which is not a problem) every couple of weeks now, and worry that a new framework update could break thousands of existing Disks. I’ve suffered minor breakages before, thankfully nothing critical. It would be extremely reassuring to have tested beta versions before any public release.
Whilst I’ve requested this every time I’ve filled in the distribution agreement, I’ve yet to hear back from Adobe.
An email address or even a forward of this question would be much appreciated!
I’ve always found Adobe staff to be very helpful once you’re talking to the right person, so here’s hoping!
Many thanks Lee
Hi Lee ..
How can anyone use Text Layout Framework to write RTL language ?
1) What (if any) 3D enhancements can we expect in the next Flash player? For example, will there ever be support for a 3D format such as COLLADA?
2) Is it time to make a player that utilises graphics acceleration where available and software rendering (as now) as a fallback? I fear the “lowest common denominator” tactic, which admittedly has lead to flashes ubiquity and success, will hold it back with the ever more diverse hardware platforms Flash is required to run on. I’d like to see more options for the programmer to utilise the hardware available and be able to handle the downgrade to smaller machines/devices themselves.
3) Is there any initiative to provide decent debugging in Flash CS5, or is the assumption that serious coders will all use Flash Builder alone? Why can’t we have it all in one application, drawing/animation tools and strong coding tools?
1) Any plans to change the “Automatically Declare Stage Instances” setting to figure out what the common base class of applicable clips are? This makes writing large AS projects with one such conflict an occasional frustration… seems like a simple thing to do.
2) What are your thoughts on the non-flash-savvy web community beginning to lash out at Adobe in favor of the HTML 5 video tag? I’ve seen some nasty things written about Adobe on the subject of video, most of it not true, but unfortunately for many people, perception is reality.
3) Does Google switching from a Flash platform to an HTML 5 platform for video have business consequences for Adobe?
4) One of the biggest rails against Flash is it’s poor support on Linux, you guys missed the boat much like Microsoft did, not foreseeing the surge of netbooks (aka, low performance linux machines), something that Flash does poorly on. Is better support for Linux/64-bit on the way? ETA?
5) Is uniform text presentation between Mac and PC *ever* coming? This remains one of the most terrible parts of the Flash design process.
6) Line-height for text fields… please?
That’s all I got for now, but there shall be more in the future!

Hi Lee,
I see this all over the place on message boards and have often bemoaned myself, “Why is there no easy way to make a copy of an imported .swf?”
Can you explain the best practice to making a copy? as opposed to, say, using loader over and over which can suck time-wise.
Thank you!
Hi Lee. Great idea man, most of my questions where already asked by other people but here goes my list:
-Will Flash Player benefit from GPU acceleration or maybe support of OpenGL or something?.
-What happend with the CS4 branch of Papervision3D? Will Papervision benefit from the improvements in performance of FP10 like Vector and Matrix3D anytime soon?. When would be released PapervisionX?
-Alchemy. Dream or reality?. Will Adobe continue to develop the merge of ActionScript and C for faster proccesing, or is it going to stay in the “Labs section”?.
-In Papervision3D/FLARToolkit, how can I make a plane that’s always facing to the camera (the center of the screen)? Or how can I obtain the position of the camera assuming that the origin is the detected marker?
-In Flex Builder, for ActionScript projects… How can I created multiple swf files from within the same project?. Like having a main application that loads different swf files containing other app modules.
Even if you don’t answer any of my questions (due to the huge amount of questions you’re receiving), it was fun just to dump here all the question in my mind =)
Thnx man!

Regarding Text Formatting:
Of all the things I could possible think to ask an Adobe Guru, this shouldn’t be high on the list… but it’s one of those questions that I haven’t been able to find a documented answer for.
The problem is this: when text in a dynamic text field has at some point in the user experience been selected with the mouse, perhaps for purposes of copying and pasting, and then is updated programatically, the text field loses its formatting (and if is using an embedded font, disappears entirely.)
I know that I can capture the textFormat with getTextFormat() before the programmatic change to the text, and then simply reapply the format after the field has been updated; but I would love to know what is happening under the hood here. It feels like a bug, but has been around for a long, long time… indicating that there is likely a better explanation.
Thanks for any help!
Question:
Flash Lite 3 & ActionScript 2.0 are here for the near future. Flash Player 10 on mobile really isn’t going to be here until 2010, even though it will be shown at MAX 2009. So… with all of Adobe’s tools focused on AS3 development, how are developers supposed to code for AS2? FlashDevelop or FDT seem like the only options out there. FlashDevelop is Windows only and FDT costs too much (in my opinion). Why can’t Adobe release an AS2 package for Flex Builder just for code hinting? Or does this just make it harder for Adobe to push AS3 as the long term solution?
- John, Las Vegas
Hey Lee,
Thanks for the opportunity.
1. Future version of Actionscript – any approximate dates and is it going to allow us similar possibilities as in C# and/or Java
2. Server-side Actionscript
3. Flex framework – Any future plans to target multiple developing languages? Obviously support of Java, C#, Haxe and Javascript will be ideal. But even Haxe enough would be a great advantage.
4. Flex framework – support of Ajax-alike compiling output. Well, swf is swf but I would love to see Flex support to DHTML output similar to the one in OpenLaszlo. Even better – exported DHTML code to step on any of the well-known Ajax frameworks like Smartclient.com, Qooxdoo.org, Ajax.org or ExtJs.com. All Ajax frameworks gain a lot from new versions of browsers with faster JS code execution. Not to mention that combining this with Javascript developing support will gain a huge Web dev peak in time.
Question:
Instead of Adobe trying to get Flash on the iPhone, why not instead invest resources to convert Flash Player 10 bytecode into a XCode package ready for deployment? Alchemy in reverse. Adobe users stick with Adobe tools to create as they always have (Flex, Flash or even Fireworks or Flash Catalyst). Just package an “iPhone SWC” for code hinting and API stuff. That way, instead of having a Flash SWF that may or may not run well, create native iPhone apps (or Android apps, or Pre apps), using the same skills we’re using now.
- John, Las Vegas
What are the best practices to improve programming logic? can u explain?
What is the future of the Flash application? Is it going to be phased out? Adobe has Flash Builder and a new app for Flash designers, so is the Flash app going away?
Thanks!
Hi Lee. As most people have already said, this is a great idea.
My question is regarding typing and whether using the as operator is better.
Eg is:
var mySwf : MovieClip = loader.content as MovieClip ;
better than:
var mwSwf : MovieClip = MovieClip(loader.content);
I personally always use the as operator but I see plenty of code using the other method. One benefit I have noticed when using the as operator is that if the cast fails it returns null rather than a TypeError (which the other method does).
Does it even matter which one is used? And if so, why?
Thanks,
Ben

Ben –
I think you answered your own question. Using the “as” operator will save you from getting a run time error. With “as”, you can just check for it by using if (mySWF) { … } versus having to wrap your MovieClip( loader.content) in a try…catch to prevent the RTE.
hi Lee,
this is my first post here …now let me tell you my problem first ..
i made a animated flash file in CS4 and then saved it as Flash Document CS3(*.fla) so that it can be open in flash CS3 as well.Till now my flash file was working fine.
But when I opened it on flash CS3 and compiled it , the animation gets start flickering.. (some part of my flash file object start flickering.)
I tried a lot of thing to solve this issue but nothing is useful for this issue.
Even i don’t know why this happen !!
If any one have any idea regarding this issue .. plz let me knw ..
thanks ….
> about Flash/Adobe in relation to the iPhone:
- As a programmer, do you think I shall wait for Apple to see Flash plugin running on it (so I will be able to program for iPhone in Actionscript) or shall I learn iPhone programming.
- To be honest, I have serial doubts about watching Flash on the iPhone. Do you really think Adobe and Apple will have an agreement about this? If not, don´t you think this could be ‘the beginning of an end’?
Thank you in advance!
When is flash player going to have multi thread support?
First of all Lee it’s a great initiative thanks.
Now here is my simple question.
For me both Flex/Silverlight are very good tools for building RIA’s Adobe has won the battle but the war is still on.
My question is this that tool’s provided by Adobe for building Flex Application’s are not as good as compared to the Microsoft and there VS IDE for silverlight is way better than Flash Builder.
Is Adobe doing anything about it ? because they may loose it in long run is they are not. And with the release of Expression Studio which is way better than Flash catalyst they have really raised the bar.
Look we only do what client’s want and for developers to make shift to any other PL is not that difficult if you have strong programming basics. And we always prefer tools that are easy to use and give us full control and client’s also listens to it as he needs it’s work ASAP.
I am really worried about this as I have been doing flex for a while now.
Please answer this question too.
I am a Flex developer in India as you asked for location.
When will we get:
– better language features such as single-line properties, like in c#
public int x { get; private set; }
– A better compiler – why are haxe and alchemy more optimised than the AS3 compiler?
– Joypad support?
When i open a cs3 fla file it often happens that most of the fonts are not recognized because of the first letter (upper/lower case – case sensitive. hope you know what i’m talkin about). what’s wrong with that?

Hi so I have a couple of questions.
What was the main reasons for not having Adobe Max Europe event this year?
I understand stand that CS5 is already under the works, is there a planed date for the release? and doesn’t Adobe feel like to many products to fast ? Its seems that quality of the products has dropped for fast releases. When Flash CS4 came out, it short way to many bugs

Hi Lee
Great Idea. My questions are much of the same!
.) Adobe Alchemy, this is a great feature in maturing the flash code. Is this going to be pushed further? Will Actionscript be pushed into the direction of c#/ c++?
.) is there a method in the up and coming future to get on the blo#dy iPhone? I’m not enjoying Objective c, an prefer AS3!
.) Will we get improvements in memory usage
.) Will we get the ability to have hardware accelerations – access to OpenGL/ graphics card.
.) Papervison/ away3d are great for flash. But with the growing trend of unity3d, will adobe be “helping out” the flash 3d engines to give the same performances/ ease of use – to win back the developers?
.) Forgive the corniness – Adobe has many great products, and I’m able to live a realitvely artist life but to buy all of the products needed to start a company/ “get onto the ladder” it is relatively expensive, will adobe (in mind of poor CS4 sales) drop prices to all their products. Or offer complete solutions for small-business/ start up Companies.
.) Please dont loose to Silverlight!

Have to reiterate this one… Maybe it will get through…
What does Adobe plan in regards in Flex Builder / Flash Builder on Linux? Many of us who develop on Linux are still using an alpha of Flex Builder 3 that expires in 120 days…

Wondering why Adobe hasn’t adopted the model of Apple’s App store for the AIR Marketplace. Certainly a centralized marketplace for inexpensive, cross-platform apps would be appealing to large numbers of computer users… but the lack of built-in commerce leaves developers looking to profit elsewhere (like Apple’s App store).
What a great initiative. I’ll hurry, perhaps I’m lucky and you catch my questions. Ok, so (maybe quite no-money-student questions):
1)Will you assure me from Adobe a FMS and/or Stratus license and advertising about the app if I give you the pleasure of having more than 10,000 users in a facebook app that uses Stratus for live videoconference?
2)What would be your suggestion if you wanted to get to heaven-level high Atenea, actually in the highest rated page of AIR MARKETPLACE (http://livedocs.allaire.com/cfusion/marketplace/index.cfm?event=marketplace.offering&offeringid=10540&marketplaceid=1). Aren’t you joining us with it? ?

Hi!, it is possible to move the velocity of a movieclip according to the rithm of the music?
Hi Lee,
that idea is so good and interactive so my questions is :
1- When adobe will make flash player (Flash/Flex) fully support for Arabic language specially in flex ?
2- Does adobe planning to release CS3 or CS4 packages for Linux ?
3- Why Adobe shows no interest in north africa countries Like Egypt (my country)?
thanks Lee for you interest and wonderful job you do and I hope that you can take my questions to Adobe and answering it .
Hi Lee,
first of all thanks for allowing the community to address adobe through you.
I have a couple of questions, most of them have been posted already but i would love to hear an answer as-well.
1. Is the microphone object going to opened up for byte access
2. could video and audio be stored/buffered locally first before they’re sent/published to Flash Media Server? i would like to give users an option to have a constant quality in recorded material regardless of bandwidth.
3. AIR has access to response headers of the URLLoader object is this going to be added to the Flash Player too?
4. what does as4 hold for us? if it’s as big a step as as2 to as3 will we be able to travel effortlessly along the forth dimension and save the universe?
5. are the livedocs going to be faster?
Btw: I love flash.

Hey Lee,
Great site! Love the forums and the tutorials!
Question: What is the easiest/most common way to extend your .swf dynamically over existing content on the rest of the page. For example….a video palyer off to the side, but you click a button and it dynamically extends out over existing html content?
I am not asking for “actual code snippets”, which you said basically wasn’t going to happen…just the general approach so I can try it out. I am jsut kinda stuck at where to start on this type thing.

My question:
Is Adobe planning to create Actionscript libraries for PDF generation, parsing and viewing?
They’re pretty much needed. We have third-party solution ( like swftools + alivePDF ), but it is has pretty poor set of features.
When Adobe will give Flash Developers control over PDF?

There is very annoying Flash Player bug, related to impossibility of Global Exception Handling:
https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-444
http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1499
This distracts so lot of developers. Is Adobe plan to fix it and when, in what milestone?

What is the special magic material that makes CS4 cost twice as much in the UK as the US, and who is responsible for insisting on BS excuses and the hot air nonsense we get in reply to this question every time?

Flash Builder seems pretty mature and so does the Flex 4 SDK. However there are still several critical UI components that were in Halo that have not been added to Spark. Is there any plan to get these critical components into Flash Builder in the near future? Having to style 10% of your app using fonts, css, etc for Halo and the other for Spark is a real pain and adds some bloat.
datagrid
advancedDataGrid
viewstack
dateChooser
dateInput
Thanks Lee!
Ahhh also the Alert component!
1. In Flex Builder, how do you change the highlight color for search results? I refer to the highlighted background that appears behind whichever words match a search in your code. I’ve been trying for months to change mine.
2. In Flex Builder, is it possible to close the Find window from the keyboard? As far as I can tell, it seems to require a mouse click.
Hello.
I would like to get more info about moving from Flash to Flex, how to create fully workable SWC components, how integrate them with Flex ( i mean handling events and etc. )
After doing some searches in internet i got only 3 video tutorials i think.. and nothing more… ( when you trying to search Flash and Flex in one request so many useful info is displayed )

Hey Lee,
1. With the new FileReference changes in CS4, we can open images from a user’s computer, stream the image byte array into memory, and render the image on screen. Is it possible to load a video in the same way? Maybe stream the video in a little at a time, as not to overload the RAM?
2. Is Adobe working on adding full 3D support to Flash?
Thanks man, you rock!

Whats the future vision for the .f4v format? Will it ever support event cue points like .flv’s?
Thanks!
This might be a lame question, but on the CS4 flash stage, what’s the deal with object bounding boxes always being a few pixels off of the actual object? So annoying.
When will we (if ever) see updates to fix bugs and performance issues with the “Pro” components like the AdvancedDatagrid etc
How does Adobe respone to the http://dougmccune.com/blog/2009/02/08/analyzing-the-size-of-the-flex-framework-or-why-i-hate-the-advanceddatagrid/ cries of its developers?
Lee,
Who killed Michael Jackson?
Will Adobe fix Flash CS4 before releasing CS5?
Why when I try to crop a video and encode an f4v in Adobe Media Encoder does the file corrupt? How can I avoid this corruption?
Hi Lee,
I’ve always wanted to why Adobe doesn’t release the vector data internals of a graphics element. For instance, it would be nice to be able to ask a Sprite instance what moveTo’s, lineTo’s, curveTo’s, beginFill’s, lineStyle’s, etc are necessary to render such object.
In particular, I’ve had to deal with this problem for taking vectors to 3D and I’ve always had to find work arounds. Be it svg, dynamic ttf parsing, jsfl scripts to extract vector data from Flash or the latest, parsing the swf itself to find the vector data in its core, these methods, although powerful, are complex and redundant work arounds.
So my question is… why does Adobe hide this stuff? Are there any plans for releasing this to the users?
Thanks,
Li
