Just Ask Us – Episode 01

Correction: Round-tripping between Catalyst and Flash Builder will most likely not be enabled in 1.0 but will come at a later point.

Update: You can also download and listen to an MP3 audio version of the video.

I have just finished uploading the first episode of Just Ask Us. The video below is around 45 minutes long and I got to 58 questions which is pretty good. The video below is being streamed with FMS so you can jump around easily to different parts. This is definitely something that I plan on doing again in the future so get your questions ready. If your question wasn’t answered in the video please try again next time. I’m also going to upload an iPod/iPhone compatible version soon for those who want to watch it on the go. Let me know what you think.

Great idea, hope this is a trend that continues. It would be cool if you had a Digg Dialogue-esque feature where readers could vote up the questions they want answers to most. thanks Lee :)

  2. leef says:

it would be very nifty if you have a menu in the player to view, and jump to questions.

  3. Very Cool. An audio version would be super useful as well :)

  4. Dude. The warning is awesome. And I have to agree with russdogg a vote on the questions would be great. Then again that is more work for you… Thanks man!

    Thanks for your attention.

I have a question: What is maybe newer in “Flash 11″ version? Adobe is working in it?

    cheers.

    Dear Adobe,

Doing this kind of thing is awesome.
As a customer dependent on your products, this makes me feel like you are super accessible and upfront as a company.

Is that ventrilo reading the warning on the beginning? Heh.

  18. Dude, fullscreen? Please? :)

  19. And by the way, thanks for the answer. I’ll be sure to check out Flash Builder 4 again, more thoroughly this time.

Newcastle Brown Ale. What a legend!

  23. Nabeel says:

Thanks Lee For asking my questions and this idea is great and I encourage your to do it many times

  24. Jim Pallett says:

lol @ “Are Adobe scared of HTML5?” ….. big swig of beer …. “NO! We’re not scared of ANYBODY!”

  25. Lee,

I consider myself pretty “in the know” of the flash world but even this simple Q & A revealed things that I didn’t know. Also I don’t know about anyone else but this also gave me a little boost of optimism for the Flash Platform. As a Developer I can say I am super excited about some of the things that are coming.

  26. Tadhg says:

    Hi Lee.

Great video, thanks for the insight, although I was disappointed that my question wasn’t answered. I felt many of the answered to the questions posed could be found elsewhere but as of yet I haven’t been able to find a scrap of info on why there’s no mouse wheel support for Mac? Perhaps this is what drove you back to a PC? ;)

Maybe another commenter can shed some light on the subject, or point me in the right direction? Even the standalone player has support, only browsers now remain without support, why?

    Cheers,

    -T.

  27. Shad says:

You shouldn’t use this FLV player for these great videos..

  28. Peter says:

    Nice video!
BTW Are many of the Flash CS4 bugs related to Adobe employees drinking on the job? ;-)

  29. Michael says:

Great video, Lee. One thing that bothers me though is the Adobe attitude toward Linux. “Most people who use Linux wouldn’t use Flash IDE anyway”… I honestly think it’s the opposite. Most people who use Linux don’t use the Flash IDE because it simply isn’t available. Linux is really gaining steam. If Ubuntu was the Win 98 for Linux, then we are starting to see a lot of XP’s emerge as well like Crashbang or LinuxMint. These are user friendly distros popping up that need love…

I know personally that if I could get CS3 to work worth a damn with Wine I would be much more included to use Linux. Although yes, Flex Builder does get you a long way.

    Start collected more questions!

  30. personman says:

You could pop the saturation a little. Adjustment panels aren’t for nothing! :)

  31. Great video lee! Already waiting for more!

  32. Jo says:

    Quality!
    That’s a really great insight into what’s coming up – can’t wait for multi-touch!!
I had to listen the audio though cos the video was really jittery.
is it possible to cache streamed video to improve this??

  33. odie says:

Good job Lee and thanks for answering my question re: ‘Tour de Flash’.

PS: I think Fedor simply didn’t want to be a puppet for Dana White when it comes to managing his career and his company. Unlike any other major sport, Dana and the UFC currently have all the control over the fighters and their contract terms.

  34. khaled says:

    thanks lee

  35. Great idea Lee! very useful… I will be waiting next episodies.

  36. Yujin says:

I would like to get downloadable version of the video, so i can watch and save to my hard disk.

  37. I concur about the mac mouse wheel support. I think it’s kinda lame that these issue continue to be a problem. Also, what about type kerning on a mac? Will that finally be resolved in cs5? And the biggest of all, what about round tripping between flash builder and cs5?? Why call it flash builder if it doesn’t integrate with the Flash IDE??

  38. AM says:

    Hi,

Im a Computer Student. I know Flex can be used as a front end for a RIA with Java as the back end. But, I was wondering if this is the case why isn’t everyone using it?

Is there any limitation on the Java-Flex appliccation versus a complete Java(using Swing) app?

    Thanks

  39. Rob Erskine says:

Thanks for answering my question! Can’t wait to see more in the future. < Adobe 3

  40. Fardeen says:

Good idea this kind of vid !

A list of all questions with a direct jump in the video would be great !

  41. mousedown says:

Thanks for getting the Answers to us. Some exciting news, looking forward to seeing some of the stuff you mentioned. oh, and props for the choice of drink! Didn’t realize Newky Brown reached that far.

    mousedown, Newcastle

  42. XceeD says:

I’m a flash game developer/hobbyist and I primarily work on making rhythm/music-based games.
Since the release of computeSpectrum and the more recent Sound.extract and SampleDataEvent, I’ve been craving for Adobe to do more with sound and all.
Well, recently, I’ve been playing around with Java and have created a very simple FlashJSJava bridge, have Flash sending midi info to Java and having Java play it. I’ve also made use of Java’s microphone functions and have made a pitch detection for that. But, since all of this is done with the FlashJSJava bridge, the transfer of information is “slow” in the sense that if it was all done in Flash, it would be a lot faster.
And this is where my question comes in: what is Adobe planning to do with sound creation/manipulation in CS5 and future releases?

P.S. Any plans in including André Michelle’s guitar synthesis thing :P ?
    P.P.S. Amazing video!

  43. Abhishek says:

    Brilliant. as always. Brimelow!

  44. Anup says:

Can you tell us about when the next major AIR release is scheduled for and what’s in it?

  45. N2 says:

Way to go. Thank you, Lee.

  46. cuxun says:

Lee you are a legend!!!!! Freaking AWESOME!!!!! Please DO MORE!!!!

  47. Great job Lee! And by the way, thanks for answering my roundtripping question. An anxiously awaiting the version in which this is available, ’cause I would really really love to have tha functionality.

Question: is there any way that I can embed your video on my blog?

  48. Simon Bailey says:

Very very helpful Lee thank you for your time on this.

My only gripe is I feel the RSL issue was skipped around again, as I have personally found and seen in the community. This is a real pain in the rear, Flex deployed RIA’s ride so much on RSL’s and the vagueness Adobe are cloaking this issue in seems disappointing. Please keep us updated on this one.

    Thanks again,

    Simon

  49. Muhammad1 says:

Hey man! I too wanna have as many fans as you do!! :(

  50. Mmmm...XML....3Doh! says:

Flash on Tap lives! Great vid. Good idea. Excellent info. (Have to ask though, is keeping the Newcastle label turned to the camera a Seinfeld-style product placement? Is a Jr. Mints or Snapple contract in the works?) Agree with the other posters about popping the saturation a touch and adding a “jump to question” menu and a full screen option. Has Adobe made plans to buy a small country yet? Have you heard which one they are targeting? Will the marketing folks have to wear business suits on the beach?

If I buy a new Adobe CS4 master suite today, will it have the updated Flash CS4 version, or must I still download and install the update?

  51. Rackdoll says:

Thnx Lee! you rock! Am happy to welcome the z-sorting with open arms!

    :)

  52. Rackdoll says:

    while(infinity){
    Adobe > Apple;
    };

  53. Rackdoll says:

Btw Lee, i wanted to say ( also @michael ) that i too am a fan of Linux… and also mad about Flash.. but this bugges me out that i cannot use flash in Linux and that i need to open a super slow VM to serve my needs.

Plz people at Adobe, reconsider your thoughts on flash for Linux. Dont be scared of the whole opensource OS idea.. embrace it.

    thnx!
    Rackdoll

    ow and Flash4Life …hehe

  54. leslie says:

This is so cool. Thanks Lee for doing this.

And I appreciate your saving my question for last. How will I ever top it next time?

I think you should know I have updated to latest version of Flash CS4 and still have problems with crashing, slowness and other intermittent weirdness. And what is with it taking over my entire desktop on launch? No other CS4 app does that.

Thanks again for an informative 45 minutes! Look forward to the next round of questions…

  55. Aaron Beall says:

This was great! Like someone else mentioned I consider myself pretty well informed in the Flash world but this was insightful none the less.

I have one question, I assume you’ll be posting a “just ask 02″ entry in the future so I’ll stay tuned for that.

  56. Step Schwarz says:

Awesome. Thank you. The “ActionScript 4″ question is one I get a lot around here, so I’m happy to pass along your answer. Really hoping the font improvements in the CS5 IDE mean better cross-platform support. Most (all?) OpenType fonts shift vertically between Win and Mac and the line spacing (or maybe it’s the height?) is off. Makes things difficult in our cross-platform shop.

  57. rur says:

    “We’re not afraid of anybody!”

Yea… Newcastle Brown Ale will do that to you!

  58. Code.My says:

I cant play it and can click the play btn, can help or fix?

  59. Are you drinking a bottle of Tabasco? That’s hard-core mate. :)

  60. Vitaly says:

Lee! You are the best evangelist, I’ve ever met! Thank you!

Video is great! I just want more :-)

PS: Can you do some advanced tuts on papervision3d?

  61. Hi Lee, I have a question for the next video… When is adobe going to release a flash player for the Iphone? Can’t believe it has not came out yet.

  62. forget my comment above. I just got to the part in the video where you address the iphone question.

  63. Phil says:

Lee – you’re awesome! thanks for taking the time to do this.

  64. cm says:

Lee is the number one stunna…

Thanks mate hopefully soon you can eleborate on new touch and sensor APIs… pref with how they will work with Win 7 and browser etc.

    Cheers man great video!

  65. Joe Berry says:

great vid – thanks again Lee!

  66. Pim says:

Adobe, not scared of anyone :D
Great job Lee! Again nice material for the flash community

  67. Mathias says:

Cant wait for the code editor changes in the Flash IDE!

  68. Mathias says:

oh and what about the fonts moving down 6 pixels in an FLA when I get a flash file on my windows that somebody else was using a mac for to design the elements of the project. This is a huge issue for me most of the time, and I’m surprised I don’t see this issue in many places

  69. Jason says:

Fantastic stuff, Lee! Please do release another show.

  70. scott from kauai says:

Hey is there any way you can separate the questions

  71. scott from kauai says:

I mean separate the questions so that we know which part of the video to go to instead of having to listen to the whole thing to find the answers
to the questions? If not its cool. Its rad that you are doing this already!
