| I just uploaded a new video that shows all of the exciting new features coming in Flash CS5. In a previous video I focused on the new iPhone development features but this video shows the rest of the cool stuff we have in store for you. This includes the XFL format, the new text engine, and the one and only Deco tool. Again, this is a prerelease version so everything is subject to change. |

Thnak’s Lee, great preview as always!
no BETA ?????????????
Thanks for the preview, can’t wait to start playing with the new CS5 code panel. Any news on the release date?
I’ve seen videos of a GUI physics engine for designers… Is there any word if this will be included to the beta?
…if there is a beta.
Thanks Lee,
Clint
Thanks for the video Lee, but it sucks about the possibility of not having a chance to play with the beta. It feels like Christmas morning and in my stocking, I find a big lump of coal…. Bah Humbug!!
Hey Lee,
So its not sure that there will be a beta release? I was so excited about that? What happend? I really hope there will be a beta before the end of december 2009.
Sneek peek video is reallyyyy coool. But now i’m more excited to test it.
Greetz,
Jay
The integration with Flash Builder is great, everything else… well, personally I don’t think I’ll ever use and I’d rather get those features as an update to CS4 (similar to when Adobe launched AIR compiling update for CS3) than pay for a completely new version.
And the Deco Tool. Still? WTF?
I was quite doubtfull about the progress of the Flash IDE, specially in the last years, f.e. the update from version 8 to 9 (CS4). After watching the sneak peek I am still doubtfull, because you don’t fullfill all major needs and I am sure you won’t do it till the release.
But nevertheless all new features and approvements, I’ve seen so far, seem to come (again) from people who are actually using the IDE. It’s not enough, but it seems so that the right direction might be (re)found. Let’s see.
Woot! Is the public beta still on schedule for a 2009 release?
Great new features!!!
I love the integration with Flash Builder and the new text features!
About CODE SNIPPETS.
First, great job, that will be very useful for quick demo’s, and small apps. It would be cool if this could also be used with custom classes. For example, building SWC components, I’ll have a number of sprite containers that makeup the SWC component, if you could select one of them on stage, double click the code snippet, and have that code snippet applied to the object’s custom class (if exists), or the parent’s custom class.
About FlashBuilder integration
HOLY 5H!T!!!! YES!!!! Please keep the Adobe engineers pursuing this direction. I still LOVE designing SWC components in Flash, which I code in FlashBuilder/Eclipse. In fact I’d be happy if they simply gave FlashBuilder the same custom Sprite/Component design environment as Flash.
Thanks for the preview ! Can’t wait to upgrade to CS5. A lots of improvements. I really like the new XFL file format. The new Text Layout framework offers a lots of possibilities. I just think about AIR, mobile, etc…) Newspaper would be able to develop AIR/mobile applications. The «new» Actionpanel with full code completion for custom class. It’s about time! CS5 is Flash 11? It will help us to learn new classes faster. Once again, a lot of little feature that will make our workflow faster. Can’t wait to work with it in real-world projects!
Great sneak peek. A lot of cool new features, especially the custom classes introspection (finally!) and the font engine. The XFL format is nice too, but I think You should think also about including some kind of shortcut inside the folder, to make it possible to open XFL saved Flash file from the Finder, without launching Flash IDE first.
Anyway, the things I would love to see the most in FCS5 is IDE not changing size or position of my shape/MC from integer value to .1 or .9 in some cases; not disappearing full black, 0% alpha shape; remembering to launch in fullscreen if I want it to (which I think is still an issue, as I can see in the video) and finally Actions panel size not going crazy when I open my FLA created on Mac in Windows and vice versa. Yeah, I would really love all these annoying bugs go away forever.
Great work with Your code snippets panel, BTW.
Not first, not last, one more time, thank You Lee for Your great work.
Greetings!
i’ve seen a flash cs5 sneak peak at max 2009.the vids are on-line.
One video was the most interesting for game developers…
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-design/flash-platform-gaming-showcase/
i don’t expect a full blown physics engine in flash before cs6 if that will ever happen i don’t know.
but one thing is for sure something’s happening behind the scenes regarding flash game development for a reason.
Excelent video. Flash CS5 will be more usable and add more capabilities, is awesome.
Hello Lee,
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
About Code Snippets: I always accompany your videos and when you will be working with some code in actionscript on the timeline, you always create a layer called Actions, and then lock it. I noticed in the video that the layer is locked, when you used the code snippets. My suggestion is that they would lock the layer as well. I think that has become habit for many people, including mine, to do this.
Thank you.

Hello Lee
its a Great .
Flash Cs5!
I Cant Wait in Iran.
Opinion.
Flash and Flex should have been fused together into a single application long ago. Flash Builder 4 is great and CS5 looks considerably better than its predecessor, but having to jump back and forth between two applications that build .swf files is still a bit much – not to mention having to buy both if you want what each provides. For the Flash IDE folks, Flash Builder could have just added an (optional) Timeline (or added a “Timeline” Project option) and also threw in some drawing tools as well. Seems like a pain having to keep two development tools updated. It all seems to point to the fact that there should be a single application that does everything. Instead of Flex Builder, Flash (IDE), Flash Builder 4 and Catalyst – how about just plain “Flash Tools” with a “one app to rule them all” mentality.
This is really a great video. I have posted about it on http://www.webdesignmo.com/blog/2009/12/17/adobe-flash-cs5-sneak-peak/
Thanks!
Hi, All these features are greate, but there still a problem with arabic.
when you put arabic text it’s look greate inside the flash IDE but when you test the movie the letters are separated and it’s not readable (arabic people may not understand it).
it’s probably a beta version of flash IDE and I hov this litle bug will be corrected in the final version.
thanks for all.

Great stuff Lee. I understand the reasoning that there may or may not be a beta. However, my concern is in regards to stability. CS4′s lack of stability at launch was down right appalling. Hopefully CS5 will not be the same =/
But great stuff in the demo, thanks Lee!!
as achraf said .. there is a problem with Arabic
it looks great inside the IDE ..
but not in the player after publishing
this is disappointing
Real programmers use tweezers and a very small magnet.
Can you guys have the actionscript layer locked by default when autogenerating it via code snippets? That would further incourage best practices by preventing designers from throwing objects onto that layer.
For extra points: why not change Flash to have a dedicated actionscript layer in the timeline? That would help beginners reduce confusion and would save a very common step for advanced scripters.
I just got email confirmation that there will be no Flash CS5 beta. Sad day. =/

meh.
incremental features that slightly improve workflow and should have been added 2 versions ago.
and ridiculous features like the deco tool.
the problem with having a continual upgrade path as a business model is it eventually results in bloatware
i am very happy finally i can do arabic flash sites easily and code more confortable
You know what would be really awesome… if you could provide an expected XML structure and get code hinting on your XML objects for children and attributes.
You should put diffusion curves in CS6.
Thanks for the preview. The flash builder integration is the best bit.
You didn’t show the help menu- is it still the horrible web based help introduced in cs4 and hated by everyone or have you gone back to integrated help within the app like cs3 and earlier (please say yes)?
Also the deco tool – what’s the business case for this – I mean when would I ever actually want to use this? why would I want to create my own brushes – I honestly cant think of a real world use for this, which makes me wonder why adobe spends time on it

Lee, i think you are a cool guy and Adobe is very lucky to have you as their promotor for flash.
It must be getting hard though to hide the sceptical undertone (actually I felt you were not completly able to) Don’t get me wrong, i love the swf format and the actionscript language capabillities BUT the flash IDE is really loosing it if you ask me. The completion support for custom classes and such is presented as an improvement and although it is for the IDE, come on…it should have been there since AS2, you (=they! (not you Lee!)) can hardly be proud. All alternatives for flash development have had this all along, including snippets. I believe flash CS5 shows it’s identy crisis more than ever. Having to switch between flash builder and flash to tweak some settings in the one, some in the other…man! What does flash want to be ? I think Adobe is trying to ‘please ‘m all’ in very much the wrong way. The IDE is far to complex and heavy for simple graphical (assets / animation) stuff but also insufficient for those who actually develop applications in the swf format. To get the best of both you need them both, but this comes with having way to heavy, double features…etc.
Why not strip ‘m both, make all into modules, allowing users to architect their own ideal set of tools for their specific use into one program?
This turns out much more critical than I intended, but I guess it’s how I feel. As a final optimistic remark; The text handling improvements look great, how would you get to them via script ? will this come available to AS3 or is it gonna be AS4 only ?
Hey Lee hope all is well.
I have a couple of questions if thats cool.
XFL and the integration with FB look great, but does that integration rely on FLA’s though as you demo’d in the video, or does the integration work with XFL? It highly likely that version control will take place from FB (even if a designer edits the file elsewhere, the dev will pull it into FB using subclipse etc), so its important the integration works with XFL.
Also its still uses FLVPlayerback? How come OSMF isn’t replacing it?
Hi Lee,
Arabic text in the exported swf (in your video) lacks ligatures, the letters are separated individually and that’s not how arabic text is written, we’ve been suffering from this annoyance and asking for proper RTL with double byte and ligatures with every release, I don’t know what’s the status of arabic diacritics support in the TLF but seeing in the exported swf all the letters separated from one another makes me more of pessimistic about the promised support…
mmmmmmm no built-in deep zoom or a 3d engine as easy as the one in After Effects?
@Wassim
As I understand the text engine in Flash Player 10 supports ligatures (see http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/textlayout/). You can play with the text stuff using Flex Builder & and the Flex 4 SDK, you don’t have to wait for CS5.
Lee any response to my couple of questions?
I know you’re probably tired of all the talk about CS5 but would you please explain a little about the physics engine, and the improved bones tool?
Thanks Lee! Great tutorial again. I can’t wait for CS5.
. It seems CS5 still can not correctly display Arabic directly in text field(without TextBlock). Could you confirm that? Thanks!
Our company is working on some Arabic language projects. We are very painful on Arabic language display problems. I asked my co-worker who is from Middle East, he said the Arabic in your video does not display correctly. Characters combination is not right in this example. This is the same problem in our projects. I know there is solution using new TextBlock in CS4. Kind of complex
does cs5 support implementation of rtmp on iphone?

thx for ur support, I’ve sent punch of msgs to Adobe talkin about the Arabic issue …
so hopfully it’s done now !!
come on guys..
I’ve been sufering sence Macromedia Flash 3.. so I think it’s time so let flash speaks ARABIC
Lee PLEASE PLEASE answer this query:
Is there a Project panel in CS5? Has it been improved?
The Grant Skinner based Project panel in CS4 was an improvement though very unstable (projects disappeared and re-named etc.) and lacking good visual integration with the IDE. I, like many Mac users, am happy to do all the work in the Flash IDE, if only the Project panel was given some FB type love!
Thanks Lee, love the tutorials and CS5 looks great.
I’m a Japanese. The Japanese text function looks great. I could make Flash animation with Japanese text nicely.
I like the new Deco tool and see its potential. I’m a graphic designer and I’m often asked to make Flash banners, title animation, menu, icons, etc.. The task is usually pretty simple (and the budget and deadline are tight); making some kind of cool background and decoration, then put some subject, product photo, or/and title on the top. I don’t know if I use the buildings, but I will probably use the trees, lightning, flame, and the decorated brush. I’d like to make original brushes too.
Hi Lee, any chance of you asking the fags at Adobe to hook me up with a free copy of CS5? lol you guys suck.
