Flash Player and Adobe AIR Betas for Android

You can now sign up to be notified when the first public betas of both Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.0 are available. We just started the private betas and we are really looking forward to getting these technologies into your hands as soon as possible. There are going to be so many interesting things that you will be able to do on Android and there are also going to be many new skills that you will need to learn, especially if you are new to mobile design. One thing that will help you tremendously is to learn more about optimizing content for mobile devices. There are separate sign-up pages for Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.0 so go on over and get registered. Unfortunately I can’t give any information about the specific dates for the betas.

A note regarding my comment policy. Only comments that relate to the post that they are submitted under and that do not contain vulgarity will be approved. Thank you.

  1. Great. Just signed up

  2. Fuck, that sounds cool. Shit. Oops. Damn. Nevermind.

  3. Basil says:

That’s super cool, finally seeing Flash Player on mobile devices. Can’t wait to see the beta also move to BlackBerry. Just wondering, how is the Flash team shoe horning “all” abilities of the Flash Player on mobile devices, or are they going to be providing a specific subset of Flash for mobile devices.

Nevertheless, really excited to see Flash move towards the mobile platform.

  4. iBrent says:

    Hey Lee,

Can you say whether the FP 10.1 beta will involve a ROM upgrade, or would it be a separate app?

    Peace,

    iBrent

  5. cyb says:

It’s about time Adobe focuses on more promising platforms like Android ( hope a good market place for mobile phone Black Berry, Symbian, etc will be launched). Adobe should realize that there’s so much more than iPhone and totally support the MAJORITY of the mobile phone players

  6. Chris says:

I wouldn’t mind being a part of those private betas. Two of my friends received invites and they don’t even have Android phones! I’m just itching to test some AIR apps on my N1. How about a hook up?

  7. asi epshtain says:

    Hi Lee,
I’m wondering what currently available mobile device you recommend as a good initial environment for mobile development. I was looking forward to working with the Iphone/Ipad but considering Apples latest maneuvers, I would prefer working with different companies.

    Thank you,

  8. Ben Bartholomew says:

I’m really looking forward to this release. Being able to make an app that is easily distributed throughout multiple devices will revolutionize the cellphone industry. I believe, in the future, any device that doesn’t have Flash would be a device that no one buys. And, as developers, we need to insure we produce the highest quality software for our users. Thank you for keeping us up to date and providing documentation on optimizing content for mobile devices.

  9. momol says:

That’s exactly why I changed to android! You’re great at Adobe! I’m really looking forward to this beta!!!

  10. Ogy says:

    Sounding great!

Bring it on, keep up the great work and ignore the “haters” :)

  11. Mehdi says:

Hi Lee, can you please confirm that we can create standalone apps for Android and we were supposed to do with the magical device? Will there be a packager or a similar animal coming for Android?

  12. Ain Tohvri says:

I hope this initiative will introduce an ice-freezing shower to those parties not interested or willing to co-operate with Adobe. Constructive approaches will always prevail!

BTW, does it anyhow affect the Linux packages of Flash Player 10.1 and AIR?

  13. Isaac says:

    Hi Lee,

Is there going to be an SDK or patch that’ll be released for creating Android based air apps like you have the iphone packager for Flash CS5 or are we going to port the same desktop version to android? The current pre-release doesn’t have anything android related (aside flash lite 4) or is there going to be a change in the final release?

Also regarding the player, are existing android owners going to have an upgrade with the final release or only new phones will have it pre-packaged?

    thnx.

  14. Mike says:

    Lee,
This is welcome news, especially since a certain ‘fruity’ company has turned to the dark side.
My company has standardized on Blackberry devices.
Do you have any idea when the update will be available for Blackberry devices? Will I need to upgrade to CS5 or will these still work on CS4.
    Mike

  15. Arno says:

Hello, it seems that the HTC Hero does not bear the Flash Player 10.1 even after the Android 2.1 update. Is this true? Do you have additional information about this?

  16. Almog says:

Hi I wanted to know if Air 2 for mobile will out native air files or .apk, I noticed for the Google Mobile Market place you can only upload .apk. Any word when we could submitting apps.

  17. khaled says:

I am Happy to hear that lee congrats Adobe

  18. noj says:

Sounds seriously awesome. Playing with it right away .

and I’m the first to comment

  19. Geoffrey says:

Thank you for the heads up.

    Looking forward to this.

  20. Graham White says:

You want to build apps and also get them to market. What about an Adobe supported app market place? Not hardware based but in the cloud…
a Flash mother-ship where developers could sell their software and users could purchase and access their apps from any computing device (almost.. ;-)
Adobe would be in a great position to do this, give support and guidance to developers in building and leverage their reputation as the most widely relied upon software creator to help developers profit and serve a wide consumer base.

  21. Aatif says:

i hope my next phone will run on Android, it’s a little bit hard to find one here in Morocco, everybody is selling iphones….and i can’t run my flash applications on it :(

  22. Si Forster says:

Ah – that’s good news for Android users. I sure hope Apple get their backsides in gear soon.

What phone is that in the photo.. it looks pretty funky!?

  23. manu says:

finally! all these delays made me nervous… can’t wait to get my hands on it and prove some very smart CEO can get wrong sometimes.

  24. Abdol says:

but flash player 10.1 is available already on android devices like nexus one.

  25. Very much looking forward to this! Already have a couple of AIR apps in the works for Android. Not a part of the private beta, but taking my best guesses on how to implement.

  26. Martin says:

    Great,

I can’t wait to see all the possibilities offered by Flash Player 10.1 !

  27. David says:

    Sign me up please. Thanks

  28. griphine says:

    Hello,

very interested to see this beta ! :)

  29. RidleyGriff says:

Can you share with us a ballpark timeframe for how long the private alpha is expected to last? Thanks!

  30. lorenzo says:

Sweet!! cant wait for Flash 10.1 to hit Android, i have a Moto droid and for some reason i can already play mafia wars on facebook O.o..just imagine Farmville on it too xD. But on a more serious note i cant wait for it as it will enable Android as being an almost full fledged “away from pc never have to come back” platform, would be too awsome haha :D

  31. Flash Player 10.1, here I come…

  32. John says:

Can’t wait for it on my Nexus One.
Any chance of being in the private beta?
Also, will it be a total new ROM or will it just be an app?

    Thanks, (you’re awesome Adobe!!!)
    John

  33. Josh says:

Awesome job guys! I can’t wait for this to come out for my droid! Certain computer companies with a fruit for a logo (*cough* apple *cough, cough*) are going to really be sorry they didn’t support flash 10.1 on their devices once it launches.

    You guys rock,
    Josh

(Also, I’m quite intrigued by that compacted nexus one at the top–that’d be a weird phone to have if it were real)

  34. We look forward to working with Flash Player and AIR on the Droid. They will enable us to develop apps for a growing audience that continues to wait for Adobe’s functionality. Thank you.

  35. Flagertee says:

Flash on Android – most excellent. If Flash gets behind platforms like Android, they could really put the pressure on Apply to allow Flash on their devices.

Android and Flash – full speed ahead maties!

  36. David says:

    signed, hurry up

  37. theDarkIn1978 says:

Graham White: this is already an Adobe Air Marketplace: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/marketplace/

Lee: i’m looking forward to these new releases. while mobile apps are exciting, i hope there haven’t been any corners cut for publishing work on desktop environments. i’ll be particularly disappointed if Air 2.0 doesn’t (finally) offer support for 512×512 icons.

  38. Derek says:

Thanks Lee. I just signed up. Are there going to be emulators for the phones? Or something tied into Adobe Device Central?
I’ve also pre-ordered my MC CS5 upgrade. Its going to be fun times in the next few months.
    Derek

  39. gerg says:

    Hello,
    I’m here.

  40. alt says:

Lee, are the desktop versions of the new Flash Player gonna be any faster than the previous ones?

Sorry but AS3 sucks horribly. It’s fast but not fast enough for complex applications. The applications slow as heck once there are many objects on screen or the application goes full screen. What’s the point of pixel bender or 3D if it’s gonna be horribly slow?

Tell the guys at charge to completely rewrite the graphics engine and ACTUALLY use that hardware acceleration, directx, opengl and GPU. :/

  41. Linuxluver says:

I’ve signed up for the beta program. I particularly want to see Flash on Android before it is superceded by HTML5. It’s been looking like it might be a close race…..with Flash always “coming soon”.

  42. GiSmo says:

    Let’s try it ^^ I signed up

  43. Sam Johnston says:

    Holy fanboi paradise batman!

Wake me up when Flash makes it onto WinMo and iPhone…

  44. Craig says:

    Lee,

I have numerous Flash sites that rely on RollOver and MouseOver events – often as part of the navigation system. Obviously these sites won’t really work in a “touch” environment – screen can’t determine if your finger is hovering.

So what is the best way to address this issue? My guess is that I’d first detect the browser (mobile) and then pass a variable to my Flash movie in order to change the events to click. But that seems to be a lot of work – having to go back and retrofit my sites over the past 10 years.

    Thanks bud.

  45. Jose G. says:

    Lee,

Quick Question: I am the owner of a Samsung Moment. I know that Flash is out of the question for my device, but what about the updated version of Flash Lite? Does this beta cover include Flash Lite for Android devices like the HTC Hero & Moment that have non-Cortex ARM 11 processors? I know a great deal of Android users who’d love a version of Flash lite that would give us some Flash functionality vs the no-Flash iPhone solution. Appreciate any answers you can provide.

    Jose G.

What is the future of flash on the mobile platform? Should devs start moving towards AIR?

  51. eco_bach says:

Kudos to Adobe for publishing the excellent Flash Optimization Guide, though a FP9 specific version should have been available over a year and a half ago!

Is there a signup page for a Blackberry beta?

I know I am not down with the kids innit with Android, but I did get my Bold 9000 for free and the only think lacking is Flash…

  56. Flashzone says:

Great! Go go go Adobe and Flash! Go to the hell Apple and Jobs! I will not buy any Apple stuff until Jobs compromise with Adobe.

  57. shumaofei says:

    Flash Player 10.1, here I come…

  58. manji312 says:

How about less focus on ‘exporters’ and more focus on improving tools within flash. How about getting the ability to actually export movieclips as an image sequence so I can use flash more efficiently with AE, or improved brush tool options (not the art deco brush). How about getting the bone tool to work with nested symbols for replacement animation. How about more drawing options ala Illustrator. This is one user that is feeling pretty alienated by the excessive focus on exotic platforms that are ever changing when the core Flash experience needs some serious work.

  59. joseph says:

Hope that it could be run on my Nexus One.
A phone without flash is not so called “super phone”

  60. trioptic says:

Thanks Lee! My next step forward should really be towards optimization, and that PDF you linked to just opened up a whole new world for me. I didn’t even know about the getSize() function…

  66. Hi Lee,

This is a great news. I have already signed up for the notification. I attended the Adobe flash builder launch event here in singapore. I am so proud of Adobe. I believe that flash will always be ahead of other technologies. The flash team should also concentrate on the notorious browser crash issues.I feel that Adobe evangelists like you and others should start commenting on sites/forums like engadget, and others and try to explain the ‘flash haters’ who thinks flash is buggy. All the best. Flash on mobile is great. I cant wait to have it. Thanks to the flash team.

  67. hermes says:
