In this last installment we set the release states for the icons in the carousel. When one is clicked on, all the other icons scale back and a paragraph of text is displayed. This text is also being read in using XML. What you end up with is a cool, little Flash site. Check it out at http://www.gotoandlearn.com.

Today I went and worked with a class of “at-risk” kids, who are just starting in a new program to learn programming and design. I used this site and the forums here as an example when I was trying to explain how great the different communities can be, and how there are people everywhere who are happy to help them as they get started. I have been doing graphic design using photoshop, illustrator and whatever else Adobe and this year I have decided to jump into the world of motion graphics using flash. Yes, there is a way. But the thing is that with XML, it is a pain in the butt to make flash render out HTML links. You know, you have to replace ,”,’,etcs with some gibberish ASCII codes. So What I recommend you to do is to mod the code so that instead of going over the “description” tags in XML, have them go to a frame and then make your link there. I’m trying to make a full-fledged site out of that tutorial (www.doublekeyproperties.com) but it is really hard to manage (that’s why I took it down for now). Also, I would like to thank Lee for all of his GREAT tutorials! (I wish I was you Lee!)

These tutorials are great and super easy to follow. I just have one problem when I try to have the content fade in after I click one of the buttons the text color goes the exact same as the background. I tried to change the text color and background colors around but that doesnt work.

Hi Lee, very helpful tutorial. However, is it possible to add preloader for each loaded tem? because it’s not icons that I put as items. It’s little SWFs, so is there a way to preload it?

Excellent formula – still trying to break Carousel v.III out so that it includes a ‘go back’ button (displayed when the text box is on-screen), plus loading external .html pages with .css.. any suggestions?

So it goes back to the carousel but not selected pic (and the mover stops)

It’s all great except I have a problem where the masker mc is no longer working as a mask. It worked fine for lesson 1 but for 2 & 3 it no longers acts as a mask, just a regular overlaid mc. The item mc still has the setmask actionscript. I’m guessing it’s something to do with the fact that XML’s involved but I can figure it out! Any help out there?

Simply awesome. Your tutorials has helped me a lot in the Flash learing process, especially the carousel ones. Just fantastic.
Although, I have the same question as Chris, who posted a message on April 5th of the present year. It has to do with url links and how to make the images clickable, so the they open a new window once you click on any of the images in the carousel.

I too need the .FLA file because when I go to click on the item it zooms and moves like its assigned to. But when I go to click to go back to the carousel the items listed behind the item I clicked disappear, but are still click able. For example:
1st Item: Home
2nd Item: About
3rd Item: Downloads
4th Item: Comments
5th Item: Forum
6th Item: HTML
Now when I go to click on About, for example, it goes in right, but when I click it to go back, all the items ahead of it, downloads, comments, forum, and HTML, all disappear. But are still click able. It has something to do with the alpha, but I don’t know exactly where. I hope you can get back to me.

I would like to have the carousel rotated, I mean, I would like the circle created with radiusX / radiusY to have an angle, and the vanishing point on wich the objects get to their smallest position, changed.
But I don’t really understand the math.. I’ve been messing a little with different values in the code with no success.

I’m having a problem with my carousel. While the masking appears to work fine with only one button in the carousel… as soon as I add more than 1, 2 or more… the masking no long works. I’m using CS3. Does this carousel only work with ActionScript 2.0 and the previous version of Flash?

John…the word is that it only runs on AC2 not 3…i am also using cs3 should work…okay with cs2 in the publishing settings.

Is there a way to load a graphic where the description text appears after clicking on the icon. I need the text to have one line bold and larger then the rest of the text but I am not sure how to do it. Can it be done from the xml file? If not I just wanted to create the text as a graphic for each and have it load as the icons do.

I am pretty much a rookie to ActionScript. In fact, everything I’ve learned about it have been from Lee’s tutorials. A very common question here seems to be how to load in things such as links, other images and even swfs other than text in the “Content” part of this tutorial. I’ve spent hours trying to figure it out with no results. Although Lee seems like a very busy man, I’ve noticed other’s have responded to questions here. If anyone out there (or Lee) would enlighten us it would be greatly appreciated.

Fabulous tutorial!!!
Almost got it perfect. My glitch is the dynamic text fields. They’re invisible onLoad but once I either onRollOut the “tooltip” image disappears but the “tipText” field remains visisble. Same for when I click one of the thumbnails, “theText” appears, but never disappears.

i have this 3d cube animation that zooms up from small then spins and turns into a clickable icon that then unfolds
I was wondering whether its possible to add this ontop of the carousel so that once the cube has been clicked the cube’s alpha fades down and the carousel fades up. Much like when you click the icons on the carousel but as i described? Anyone know if this is possbile or even if you have done something similar

How do I get a preloader to work on my carousel site?
I’ve tried basic preloaders, to no avail. The site shows a blank screen on load and in the bottom corner it states it has “completed 1 of 2 items”. It is like it is loading the xml, pngs and swf files before frame 1 of the swf.
Any ideas?

It seems this carousel3.swf cannot be externally loaded to other SWF without error.
For days I’m trying to debug the error when calling this carousel3.swf through loadMovie from my new .fla project (filename: myFlash.fla) with a dimensions of 1012 x 578 pixels. This carousel shows-up when it is being loaded but it doesn’t inherit it’s own timeline or root thus it is taking the dimension of the myFlash.fla which is (1012×578). And also because of this the position of the carousel is outside the boundaries of the movieClip holder.
I tried to fix the conflict by placing this code –> this._lockroot = true; to the main timeline of carousel.swf but it seems it doesn’t work because the carousel uses –> var home:MovieClip = this; to refer to the main timeline. So “this” is already assigned to “home” that refers to the timeline which is causing conflict to the _lockroot. I also tried putting –> myHolder._lockroot = true; to the main timeline of myFlash.fla but same, it doesn’t solve the problem.
Mr. Lee I think you should look at this matter… please show us some light again….
How to restore inheritance of carousel’s own root or timeline when it is being loaded externally from other SWF movie?

And because it takes the root timeline of myFlash.fla the speed/movements/rotation of the carousel is being affected when you mouse hovers anywhere inside the stage of myFlash.fla. Whereas the speed/movements/rotation should only be triggered when hovering inside the movieClip holder of the said carousel and not outside of the containing MC….

I have just recently found this tutorial and it’s exactly what I’m looking for, but I noticed it’s pretty old… will this work for AS 3.0 and Flash CS4? Specifically, the classes that have to imported/called at the beginning look like they are flash mx classes… or am I wrong? Can these tutorials work as is right now, 2009 in CS4 as well? I downloaded all your files, and I couldn’t see anything, graphics/actions/scripts, etc. nothing when I opened them in the current Flash CS4.

How can I get the xml \content\ to render as HTML?
Okay, sorry for asking things that keep seem to come up here, but I just can’t seem to figure some things out and it would be wonderful if someone could steer me in the right direction…
1.) How do I add links to the XML document so that they are able to call out other websites? Everything I’ve done involving the CDATA approach makes my .swf file come up blank when I export it.
2.) How might I be able to create a “back” button or text that shows up after the text for a specific tooltip has been loaded?? I would imagine this would show up somewhat similar to the tooltip movieclip, but I can’t seem to make it work.
