Flash 9 PSD Importer and Timeline Converter!

Just got out of the Adobe keynote at Flash Forward. Check out the new PSD importer that will come with Flash 9. Everyone has been waiting for this one!

Also Robert Penner has been hired to allow you to select any timeline animation and convert it into XML for use in AS3 or Flex. Below is a screenshot of the resulting XML code.

Hopefully they’ll put Robert onto some 3D code next :-) .

Awesome work Adobe!

Commentary

  1. Adobe rocks! This is a very useful feature… Hopefully it’s not limited to Photoshop CS created PSD files and the importer works with older files, too…

  2. Zeh says:

You know, it’s funny, because after many years (~8) working with both Photoshop and Flash, today was the first day I actually needed to import a PSD file into Flash (around a hundred layers, so I didn’t want to export them into PNGs like I usually do).

I exported into SWF using ImageReady and the result couldn’t be better. Sure, it’s cool to see that importer on F9, but it won’t change stuff that much. Maybe added support for text (and layer effect translation?) is the best feature.

Michael: No reason not to suport older PSDs. Unlike most other programs, the PSD format doesn’t have ‘versions’, but rather new features that are added. So a really old PSD is pretty much like a nowadays PSD, just with less features.

  3. Paul Neave says:

Yes! About time! It’s really great to see the fruits of the Adobe merger.

  4. Quentin says:

Come on buddy, give us more screenshots!
I can’t wait to see what Flash 9 will look like…

  5. Lee Brimelow says:

Sorry but my camera blows! :-)

  6. Pixelmixer says:

wow… thats amazing. Theres a plugin for Photoshop that lets you do this, but its incredible to finally see it in action. This will save sooo much time in the future.

Sooo wishing I was there. STupid SCHOOL!, who needs it?!?! ;p

  7. Saeed Ashour says:

Great news , Anything else lee? :D

  8. The timeline scripting XML acts kind of like the FuseXML class I made. Pretty powerfull stuff, though I don’t think if you’re using the timeline to animate, XML would be very helpfull. The PSD option is going to be a god send.

I can already think of some crazy applications for the XML output. IIAC it will let you animate things manually, then re-use the XML code later in Actionscript to animate the same thing, or something else.

I want to get my hands on all these new versions~!

  10. Jason says:

It will be interesting to see how far they go carrying over the effects you have applied to layers in Photoshop to the layers in Flash.

I’m looking forward to hearing what the new icons and panels in the actionscript editor do, probably more so than the PSD and timeline export options! Coding in Flex is a dream compared to Flash 8 IDE, hopefully these two editors become a lot closer feature wise with the next release of the Flash IDE.

Give me more screenshots, hit print-scrn a bunch!

  12. Savvas says:

    Ouaou..What an amazing feature..
Thanks Adobe and THANKS Robert Penner!
    Thanks Peter for the update..

  13. Jeff Landon says:

Why is everyone so excited? Photoshop to Flash is pretty old news.

Every professional Flash developer I know has been going directly from Photoshop to Flash for years with that PSD2FLA plug-in.

This may be exciting for amateurs, but it’s not really a Flash feature I need since I already have it. Am I being paid in my own coin?

  14. Jason says:

To answer my own question from above, the new PSD import will preserve the layer effects from Photoshop into Flash. PSD2FLA doesn’t have this capability… and to be honest, for those that haven’t bought this plugin will definitely welcome the addition of the PSD import feature that Adobe is introducing.

  15. No, I agree that it’s a neat feature, but most people that use the timeline to tween, aren’t really amazing with AS to begin with.

So the only advantage I’d see over that is for non linear, motion guide type of thing, which is nice.

  16. darkredz says:

oh my god. Isn’t Flash the best program in the world?

  17. Hi Lee.

I’ve take your screenshots to ‘ilustrate’ a post about this notice in my blog. The URL is bottom of this:

  18. John Wooten says:

I think the Photoshop import feature will be great, especially if the effects are kept well. Also, I agree the timeline to AS converter will be nice for movement…but there still should be something said for learning how to code it…

  21. When is it (Flash Studio 9) going to be released? The current Alpha / Beta version doesn’t see to have any of this?

  22. It looks great, I have to say!
