Amazing New Particle Extension for Flash

Andrew Fitzgerald from Desuade recently contacted me about trying out their new particle entension for Flash called Partigen. Of course I jumped at the chance and from what I’ve seen so far, it’s an amazing extension. The Partigen extension shows up as a custom panel inside of the Flash IDE and it allows you to create emitters and assign a wide variety of particle effects to them. The extension comes with a ton of great presets which you can of course modify to your own tastes.

Check out the SWF below for a few examples of what you can create. Partigen is an AS2 extension which leverages the popular Fuse animation library. Partigen is not currently available to the public but will be very soon. Be sure to check out http://desuade.com/ for the latest news about when it will hit the streets!

I’m very excited about this extension. Now all I ask is that it someday be ported to AS3 (hint hint) :-)

  1. cool beans… can you make the water put out the flame and then have it smolder!!!!

  2. Campbell says:

Thats soooo sweet. reminds me of Particle Illusion http://www.wondertouch.com/. man flash has come a long way.
I played with similar effect in AS3 but never had the super smooth Fuse Library to leverage. Love the IDE intergration aswell.

  3. Gromit says:

I’m so excited by this. Can you please tell me, is there a great deal of processor lag when you use the effects at a large scale? ie. could the effects feasibly be used as parts of background movieclips?

  4. Wow this is great to see some Adobe After Effects particle plug-ins in Flash as a plug-in :D

  5. this is really amazing!!

  6. Wow!
I can’t wait to test it!

  7. Ben says:

saw this somewhere else but i can’t remember where. regardless its pretty cool.

  8. David says:

amazing can’t wait to get my hands on that one.

  9. Looks more than great! AMAZING! Especially the whater effect is cool, and the wind, and the fire as well :D

  10. lee says:

Yes Flash having these kinds of effects is long overdue.

  11. Pixelmixer says:

this is awesome.. theres a cool AS3 version by Andre Michelle that i’ve been using to make my own particle emissions like this… Of course, it doesnt compare to Partigen when it comes to usability, but i’ve found it to be extremely scalable.

  12. Very neat, however I foresee these guys being horribly misused :(

  13. Matthew says:

This is soooooo cool! Looks like a borrow from Apple Motion’s Particle Emitter. I can’t wait to get my hands on this!

  14. Billy says:

These effects are fantastic – can definitely included them in my classes.

  15. Barnard says:

how greeeeeeat ! now you can enjoy something even worse and useless than those ugly explosing animated gifs or burning flames gifs AND at the same time waste CPU time to compute them real time ! you’re changing the face of web dudes ! this is so “web 0.1″ …

  16. Campbell says:

3d AS3 emitter using papervision but the frame rate doesn’t seem like it would hold up as well http://www.anthonytambrin.com/pv3d/dynamics/

  17. Gromit: The effects are not made to be used at a large scale, so probably not. This is all AS2 and is fairly intensive, pushing the boundaries of AS2 and ASVM1. You could do a less intensive effect, such as vector particles without a problem, but complex effects like fire take a hit on slower machines.

Using bitmapdata in FP8+ only, you can really get some large effects, but it’s not built-in functionality due to keeping FP 6,7, and Lite 2 compatible.

    Demo of what I mean:

Kevin: Hah, I can see exactly where you’re coming from. It’s up to the developers to use it for good or evil. But it will be clear that Partigen is only used as a spice, to give it that extra something something, not take up/replace everything.

Barnard: I take it you don’t do a lot of complex Flash design. These effects wont be thrown in by themselves randomly on a html page like animated gifs are. I hate those things just as much as you. These should be interactive effects in a Flash design, that actually serve a purpose. So for example you have a torch that the user moves, the only way to get the interactive flame is with Partigen. An imported video will be static and loop, Partigen is fully dynamic and never loops, so it will react to the way and direction the user moves.

There’s no guarantee it won’t be misused, but it will actually be a lot better in terms of replacing those imported video effects, that would have taken up 5x more space and bandwidth, and as well be fully interactive.

Everyone else: Thanks for the positive feedback!

  18. Otto says:

Lee, you have no idea what i’ve suffered trying to get this effect. now you tell me its in a class!!! I need to punch someone! cant wait till it comes out tho.

  19. Frank says:

I’ve tested it on two different PC’s and as soon as I open theflashblog.com the CPU usage goes above 95% making my sytem slow. I hope they can minimize the issue with AS 3.0 by storing procedures/calculations in advance (somewhat like pre-rendering) and hence re-use resources to make it more efficient. Performance is everything these days…

  20. joseadro says:

    Good, I’ll be expecting it.

  21. fandango says:

    Great particle effects!

  23. Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know that the site is up, and pre-orders are now being accepted!

    You will NOT be disappointed.

Hi, Its great work…..I am a Flash Developer started recently can u help me for creating this type of effects in cs3.

    Thanks…….

  25. nana says:

    this is really fantastic effects ;

    thanks.. (^_^)’

  26. Bilge says:

    Hi,

Partigen is cool but i think particle illusion is more advanced to create motion graphics.

The problem is; i haven’t find a solution to optimize pi exports to use in flash, yet.

When I export in PNG,i see that file size of the Flash movie is too big. (at leeast 1mb)

If you found a good way to keep the file size down for use in Flash, can you tell me please ?

    Thank you :)
