I’m Joining Adobe

Yes you heard it right! I have just signed my offer letter to join Adobe as a Platform Evangelist. This is a huge move for me and I’m extremely excited about it. The reasons for the move are many but below are the three biggest contributing factors.

Evangelism work
This is by far the biggest reason for the move. I feel like I’ve been doing the work of an evangelist for a while now. The only problem is that I have had to do most of it in the middle of the night because I also had 40 hours (on a good week) of real work to get done. I feel that my real talents lie in creating examples, recording tutorials, speaking at events, making videos, blogging, etc. The good news is that I will be able to do much more of that in my new position. Look for gotoAndLearn() to come back in a big way!

Focus on Flash
While I will be evangelizing the entire platform, my focus will be on Flash. Flash has always been my core and it is what I’m most passionate about. I’m not exaggerating things when I say that I owe my career to Flash. Along the way I have learned many other technologies as well but I will always consider myself a Flash developer first. It will be great being able to focus on the Flash community and helping it grow and prosper. In my opinion, the Flash community is an amazing combination of design and programming genius and it never ceases to amaze me.

Dream Team
Another huge factor in my decision to move is the team that I will be working on. Being able to work on a daily basis with Mike Downey, Ryan Stewart, Danny Dura, Kevin Hoyt, Mike Chambers, and the rest of the Adobe crew is an offer to good to pass up. There are so many things that I will be able to learn from these guys and I consider it an honor to be working with them. My time spent with them during the On AIR bus tour only reinforced to me how cool these guys are to work with.

There are of course many other reasons that contribute to my decision but I will keep those to myself :-) . One thing I want to point out is that I am not leaving my current job because of any dislike for frog. I’ve loved the projects that I have worked on as well as the people that I’ve worked on them with. They are fully supportive of my decision as they know it is a great opportunity for me. As a side note, my current job will be opening up so shoot me an email if you’re interested. I highly recommend frog as an amazing place to work!

Another thing that people may wonder about is my past work with WPF and other Microsoft technologies. I am friends with and respect many people at Microsoft and that absolutely will not change. Adobe doesn’t want to hire one-sided drones and their hiring of both Ryan Stewart and myself are great examples of that. I will continue providing honest assessments of current interactive design technologies no matter who is behind them.

Except much more about my move here in the weeks to come. I am hoping to make it onto the 3rd and final leg of the bus tour and I am targeting the New York stop on the 24th as my first day. How can you beat that for the first day on the job!

  32. Steve says:

    Congratulations! You’re living the dream.

  33. Brian says:

One great site that I think is very much along the same lines as gotoandlearn is railscasts.com. I think Have an entirely flash interface for goto and learn, while logical, is not the best move given that google won’t be able to index any of the content which makes it harder for people to find. Plus having comments and/or the code from the videos would be great. Just a thought.

  34. Julien says:

    Congrats!Keep up the great stuff

  35. hebchop says:

    Congrats Lee!
Can’t wait to see what comes next for gotoandlearn.

    iBrent

  38. John says:

    Big congrats!

  39. Gina says:

Fabulous! Because I loved gotoandlearn()! It opened my eyes to many possibilities in Flash. What a gain for Adobe. And congratulations to you, Lee.

  40. Simon says:

wonderful :D looking forward to the big come back of GTAL!

  41. Nooooooooooo :) . That’s the sound of my sadness that we lose a great community voice in the XAML/WPF/Silverlight space. That said I’m very happy for yah and glad to see you rewarded for your great work.

Let’s still grab lunch sometime soon…..I promise not to whine the whole time….ha!

    Kurt

  42. Dion Almaer says:

Very cool Lee. I’m really looking forward to GTAL coming back full swing. I’m guessing this will give you more time to interact with the community too. (which is something i’ve been wanting to do for a long while now).

It would be very cool to get a blog going with all the big dogs in flash . A place your all of you guys to post your experiments that gets updated much more frequently than your personal blogs.
