Interview with Justin Everett-Church on Flash Player 10

I tracked down Justin Everett-Church, who is the Senior Product Manager for Flash Player, to talk about the new features in Flash Player 10 (Astro). I got some great information about the features that were demoed in the keynote, especially the new 3D features. As a side note, I accidentally misplaced the hyphen in Justin’s name on the video.

  1. Timb says:

Thanks a lot for the clarification on the software/hardware 3d thing, man. Much appreciated.

  2. Bazbaz says:

    Nice interview, great job.

  3. Martin says:

thanks for the interview, especially the 3d questions are really appreciated.

  4. Erik says:

Nice interview. I think it’s a shame that they don’t work together with PV3D though to integrate a full 3D engine as default in Flash.

  5. Erik says:

ps. Hydra looks awesome, can’t wait to get started with F10!!! ds.

  6. Ola Muldal says:

“whatever is fastest” he says about hardware/software accelleration issue. Obiously has to be hardware, but the way he says it still leaves me unsure.

Also the question is how it is gonna be implemented, will it like, the video in “moviestar”, only be hw-acc in fullscreen?

  7. C4RL05 says:

That makes clear your previous post was misinformed to say the least. It certainly hurts your credibility in the eyes of the community.

It’s obvious that you don’t know what a 3D engine really is. As a “Platform Evangelist at Adobe” you’ve done a very poor job, Lee.

  8. Kirk says:

Truly amazing, Astro rocks! Loving the 3D Integration and text api.

  9. lee says:

All I can say is don’t be so bitter Carlos. I was reporting news in nearly real-time from the conference so sometimes things may not be completely accurate. I made that clear in my post. Secondly, the HW issue is still an open question and we are looking into ways of utilizing HW for a wide variety of things in the player.

I’ll continue to get news out to the community as quickly as possible and will always report back any changes.

  10. Paulo Afonso says:

Thank you for the interview, that is gold information.

    Hi Lee,

Hey this is the first time I have posted anything on your blog… I just had to say “thanks” for everything dude. You have helped me alot through your tutorials with action script and your reporting on the Flash community… That’s an understatement! Just had to say thanks. Can somebody buy this guy a beer for me at the conference? If not dude I will… Have a great conference!

    cheers,
    erik olsen

The fact of the matter is that you did let us know that updates were a bit sketchy. I think he missed that part or just misunderstood you Lee.

I just think Astro + Air + AS3 = a new wave of revolutionary Flash RIA’s. With out the 3rd Party guys!

  13. wendy p says:

Lee – I can’t believe how rude some people can be. I appreciate your enthusiasm to share what you discover with all of ‘us’. You rock!

  14. nebutch says:

Lee, thanks a million for sharing this. I’ve got the link to AIF and Justin’s blog opened now…

    And I’ve gotta say…@C4RL05 –
Dude, back off. This is new info for the dev community. Let us soak it in before having to read snarky comments against it..

  15. Erik says:

Uh, just me who thinks “C4RL05″ isn’t the real Carlos?

  16. John Grden says:

I don’t want to speak for Carlos, but the problem is in how you handle the information. It’s great to report latest breaks in news and so forth – everyone does it and I dig it personally.

The problem is that you really needed to get a bit more information and clarify the facts. Sure we could probably argue about it all day, but here’s the reality you didn’t know about: we had clients contacting us the next day about your post questioning whether or not PV3D was viable and going to be around. So, your post put developer’s paychecks on the line and in some situations, in a bad spot with certain clients.

So, while it seems like posts like this are innocuous, there was considerable damage control on our plates as developers working on PV3D projects with our clients – and that costs us all time and $$ to calm them down.

I appreciate your trying to get info out as soon as it hits, but I thought it fair to show everyone that it’s not as harmless as you might think. Taking a few more minutes or even hours to get the straight scoop can really make a difference to alot of people.

anyway, I hope that helps in some way.

PS> Carlos goes by C4RL05 online.

    Great interview!
We are all excited to start working with these new features!

  18. Brouks says:

Well.. Lee doesn’t need to inform anyone about anything if he wanted to… but he does and I think it’s an extremely nice job. If you think this blog is not so nice, you can read another one…

    Hey Lee:
It was awesome getting to meet you at MAX. I talked to Justin for a split second and asked him when exactly I could get my hands on Astro but he kept giving me the “no comment” haha.

  20. lee says:

John, I understand where you’re coming from. Unfortunately in this situation there are a lot of open questions that still remain. That is why I thought it was important to interview Justin on camera about it. I’m sorry if this got some of your clients worked up as that was not my intention. But attacking me personally and calling me out like Carlos did is not something that I take kindly to.

  21. John Grden says:

I would agree, I don’t want you to be personally attacked by any means – that certainly isn’t my intention. I just wanted to give another perspective the affect of the posting had.

again, i appreciate your efforts, and I’m certainly not wanting to come across as attacking by any means ( I don’t think my tone felt that way, but if it did, I apologize ).

    Thanks for listening,

    john

  22. lee says:

John, I was not at all referring to your comments at all, but rather Carlos’. I understand that he was probably pissed at the time he wrote it though so no worries.

I love Papervision3D and have always praised it here on this blog and I will continue to do so.

  23. LEE says:

Was just going to post something like ‘can’t wait to see Adobes 3d API’. Mostly out of curiosity, as I still can’t seem to get good performance on pv3d animations that occur next to standard EnterFrame animations in interface designs. I was thinking perhaps hardware rendering would provide the missing ingredient, because otherwise PV3D is already a really great API. I’m surprised to see that Adobe didn’t pick up pv3d and then refactor. Is that what Carlos is upset about? Love your work Carlos!

I’m surprised to hear clients are even aware of pv3d. That seems like info that would never reach the minds of my clients. All they know is I use Flash, among other tools to do what we do.

But I wonder will Adobes 3d Api be better than pv3d? IMO Adobes Tween API loses compared to Tweener, so maybe the same will be true of 3D?

  24. lee says:

LEE, yeah we will just have to wait and see how it all turns out. But at least Adobe is finally committed to giving us some form of native 3D in the player. We’ve been asking that for ages :-)

  25. vamapaull says:

    wow… that’s interesting!!!
I love the interviews!!! Keep them coming ;)

  26. KL says:

Lee, How come you didn’t mention the new Inverse Kinematics in Flash. Its amazing!

  27. Thanks for the video updates. I was at MAX and did not get to see everything.

PS post the eating contest at the after party soon. ;)
