New gotoAndLearn() Tutorial on OOP in Flash CS3

I just finished uploading a new tutorial called Using the Document Class which shows you how to use this great new OOP feature in Flash CS3 Professional. This allows you to have zero code in your FLA and make your projects 100% class-based. Obviously this will only apply to large projects but it still a good technique to know about. Check it out at gotoAndLearn().

Thanks a ton Lee! AS3 is a real leap from doing things in AS2. This is much appreciated.

Hey Lee, when is the Flash IDE going to have that snazzy automated package naming found in Flex? I was so delighted not to have to type that basic syntax when demoing Flex. Unfortunately I didn’t want Flex for anything else, well maybe a few of its as3 classes…but at least I can add those to my global classpath.

Is CS4 more than 6 months into the future? Are we going to see much further developments along the lines of swc/swf libraries? What is Adobe working on to further improve runtime calculations? How about generating visual UMLesque overviews of compiled swfs? Showing object responsibilities, relationships, weight, and persistence? Anything to help developers analyze, and finetune their OO as3 apps?

And lastly, what’s your favorite thing about Flex that could be included in the Flash IDE?

Just wanted to continue the pile-on of kudos. Great tutorial. Super clear intro to the topic. I look forward to more AS3 centric videos in the future!

On a side note, I’d love to see some sort of “auto project builder” where you just type in the name of your document class and if it extends MovieClip or Sprite and then the associated .fla and .as files are created automatically along with the package/import/constructor class code in the .as file. It would save time but more importantly reduce the change for the inevitable typos when starting a project. I imagine something like that could be created using Applescript in OS X…
