I just finished uploading a new tutorial to gotoAndLearn() which shows you how to create custom SWF panels inside of Flash CS3. Many who downloaded my Event Generator panel have asked how they can create their own time-saving extensions for Flash. In the example I show how to create a simple extension that sets up your new Flash movies with a single click.
Enjoy the tutorial!

Nice one lee, thats awesome, thanks again!
Now that’s a great walk through of getting started creating custom panels!
Thumbs up all the way from Denmark
That would be great see your videos in the flash media player, with just add your rss feed, as a channel for fmp?
saludos
M!
Hi Lee. Thanks again. That’s a handy time saver!
Lee, You should make a podcast and put it on iTunes so that we can download it to our iPods/iPhones whenever a new one comes out, without the need to download it, and convert it and the whole process. Great job! I’m gonna go start writing Extensions!

Hi Lee
Do you know of any resources for creating fla based components? That is straight forward and actually works?
Thanks Lee for this one.
Just one fun thing :
In the .mxi, i can read : <macromedia-extension.
it is because ;mxi concept is old or no update for it ?
thanks for your job

Hi there. Great tutorial, it’s very easy to understand. I’ve got just one problem though. I use windows XP, and I can’t seem to find the WindowSWF folder. I can’t be the only one with this problem!
Thanks again!
Very easy, thanks Lee.
I use windows XP too and I couldn’t find the folder either. To solve that problem I made an .mxp package out off the swf I wanted to test as a panel. I used the extension manager to install it and when I reopened Flash CS3 I could use my panel. It’s longer but it works.
@Chris
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash CS3\[language]\Configuration\WindowSWF
lee mentioned looking in the “All Users” folder but I just use MY user account folder and then whatever language you use
so mine is
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash CS3\en\Configuration\WindowSWF
yours could be the same if you have Chris as your username
Thanks Chris! It works fine whenever I enter the direction into the Run interface, but for some reason the folders don’t show up when I try to browse to them.
But thanks!
Thanks for the help Chris. I think on Windows the ApplicationData folder is actually hidden so you may need to set Windows so that you can see hidden folders. Sorry about that.
Nice tutorial Lee. If you can make a tutorial that shows how to make a flash component, it will be perfect.
Really nice tutorial Lee!
Never been in that area before.. so that was brand new for me.
Hey.. btw, what are you computer specifications??
Are you recording this on your MBP or your Mac Pro?
When you rebooted flash I fell 40 secs behind… lol
I agree with Adrian, a tutorial how to make flash-components would be sweet… Let say I have an XML-menu built up on classes. How do I go about to make this into a component?
You are the muther F@#k%n man thanks
Hey Lee, when too a tutorial on a simple login system?
Best regards.
Thanks Lee
It’s amazing how such things may seems more simple, after an explanation of Lee
Obviously You have a rare skill for teaching, it’s so clear
Really nice tutorial Lee I can’t wait for the next one
What about changing the icon for the new panel when it is docked?
Great Tutorial.
I have one small question. Pardon my ignorance if this is blindingly obvious…
Q) What benefits does this have over saving an fla as a template file and then saying New > From Template
They essentially accomplish the same thing, except with this method you need to go through the hassle of dragging swfs around and closing and re opening panels to update…
I look forward to the inevitable enlightenment!
Thanks Lee, this was a fantastic tutorial, I never realized how easy it was to create Extensions! You help out the Flash community so much and just wanted you to know it is extremely appreciated.
I think the main confusion for the Windows people out there was following the ‘Local Settings’ path, because as soon as you go into your “user” folder there is an ‘Application Data’ folder in there. It took me awhile to figure this out.
Very interesting, didn’t know so much could be done with extensions. Not the most useful though as you can get all the same functionality using templates.
@Marc
I think the point of this was mainly to show us how to create a custom panel or extension and not necessarily how to duplicate THIS particular functionality. Anyway, thanks Lee. I’ve been a fan of yours for a while now, and then tutorial was amazing.
I’m really looking forward to tutorials from you that involve creating AS 3.0 classes. I don’t think I’ve seen any that you’ve done. I’d love to start creating my own classes for things that I use often but I just can’t get the concepts into my head.
This is awesome!
Just had a mare trying to find the Vista path, I’ve put it below:
C:\Users\YourNameHere\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash CS3\en\Configuration\WindowSWF
@Barry
Thanks for the path… I was ripping my hair out.
Great Tutorial… I love it.
i couldn’t find the mxi file for dreamweaver.
is it included in the file?
is it me or windows vista?
never mind just need to extract files
