Video of me integrating PHP and Flex

About month ago I went up to the city to record some video demos for the Adobe site. These are more polished than the ones I do at gotoAndLearn() and are even shot against a green screen. In this video I show how to integrate PHP and Flex together using XML. It’s not often that I do stuff in Flex but I do open it from time to time.

Commentary

  1. Very useful. Thanks!

  2. CM says:

Great Tutorial! I recently started using Flex earlier this year and this is a great example of why this application is changing the way programmers approach flash.

  3. Adriano says:

Very great tutorial, thanks a lot Lee.. and congratulations!

  4. Daniel says:

Very nice, you’re becoming a movie star!

  5. Lee,

Very nice. Quick question. What screen capturing tool or tools did they use to the zoom or scrolling during the screen sections of the tutorial? Is this a feature of iShowU or was there some other movie magic going on there?

@Matthew All of that is done post-production by our video group. Essentially you zoom in and out while your editing in Premiere or Final Cut.

  7. Andrew says:

Great Job! Is anyone else having issues with the audio playback in the video?

  8. derek says:

    great video!
    hell yeah emerica.

  9. Marion Amsterdam says:

I can’t see the video in WinXP/FireFox2/FlashPlayer9 — I briefly see the flv player with the orange loading animation, but then the whole thing disappears…
I was able to see it in IE6 though, very strange, never had any problem with videos on this site, not here nor at gotoandlearn…

  10. Claudius says:

Why that keyed background?? It looks like a 3D-Tutorial for beginners…..oh man, Adobe!
I do like your “unpolished” videos on gotoandlearn a lot more.
    Keep up.

  11. Guillaume says:

I LOVE your Microsoft mouse device !

  12. All right, Lee!

Thanks for yet another great lesson! Have you seen the Friends of ED Open Source Flash book? There’s a little bit of everything there: amfphp, PV, Fuse.

What you think? Yous coulda have writtin dat books, ya know!?

What’s the state of amfphp dev these days?

  13. This looks a lot like your older flash + php tute, except of course for the Flex tips and the fluffy background and that you’re in scene. =)

Like you I really don’t open Flex that much after so many years of touting Flash round n about. Surely amfphp is a great way to connect Flash and Flex, but nothing beats xml’s simplicity. Great job =D

  14. Mike Hart says:

Really useful, cheers for that. Does anyone know of any decent tutorials to send data from flex to a mysql database?

  15. conor says:

Hey Lee, you have a good style in your tutorials which makes them easy to follow. I’ve started using Zend AMF with Flex and value objects. All is going quite well apart from trying to exchange and store Date objects from Flex. Do you know of any good tutorials on this subject?

If not then maybe you could put something quick together as this seems to be an area which is not covered well by existing material. I’ve spent several days trying to find an elegant solution to no avail, I hope you can help with this. Keep up the good work ;)

  16. Enron North says:

Maybe you should have an “Apple” mouse :) nice tutorial thanks!
