There are now two different programs that can allow you to get Flex Builder for free. There has a been a program around for a while now that allows students, faculty, or anyone with a student ID to get a serial number for free. While at the Web 2.0 Expo this week I was surprised that nobody seemed to have heard of it. Just go to freeriatools.adobe.com and submit a scanned copy of your ID. Go take a cooking class or something and get Flex for free. Girls love guys who can cook. The other program which has just been made official allows developers who are out of work to get a complimentary copy. We’re Adobe, and we care. |

I’m a college student about to enter the job search, and I approve.
I’ve been interested in trying to get a free copy that is offered to students, however, I attend a web development program at an online school. It’s an accredited college, and I’m not here to debate the validity of online education (though I enjoy the project based curriculum over the notes + exam based curriculum). My point is though, you don’t have a student ID. The rest of Adobe’s Software can be purchased through the school’s online store which validates your student status, so you get the student discount.
I got Flex and its made coding sooooo much faster and therefore more fun. I told everyone in uni that its free!! (I’m a mini platform evangelist give me a job in the UK Adobe!)
Any more Flex tutorials coming Lee?
I have to say a huge well done to Adobe for not only supporting students, but helping to increase the employment potential of those effected by the financial screw up we are all facing. This is a great step forward and I just hope other companies will follow Adobe’s lead.
Well done.
I had registered with the freeaitools.adobe.com, obtained a free copy of Flex, albeit my hard drive on my mac went out a week ago and I lost everything, including the email with the student serial. I reapplied, but got denied this time. Tried to contact them, but no response. Hope they can resolve this for me.
p.s. Lee.. please please do a tutorial on catering to the new security sandbox features of Flash Player 10. Thanks for everything.
I have send to adobe scan of my polish student ID and after two days I have recived the adobe Flex Builder cd-key, thx adobe!
Hey Lee, is this available across the pond in the UK or is it US only? I’m at university and this would really help out with projects I’m currently working on!
When can we expect the next episode of Flasher Magazine???
Thanks Lee,
I am a student and hope that my ID works
I received a license as part of “the other program” and I have to say it’s one of the smartest, most humane moves I’ve ever seen.
Flex is an *amazing* tool – well worth every penny – but it is expensive and if your income is looking parlous it’s one of those investments that gets put off until you can comfortably justify the cost.
I just moved to a new country, recently married and scared as hell about how things are going to pan out in the current climate. I’m lucky in that I’ve picked up a bunch of gigs quickly, but I must say that I was bowled over at Adobe’s generosity in giving a license away. Yes it’s a mutually beneficial deal – their developer base has grown at a time when they’re facing stiffer competition than ever in the RIA market (javascript, SilverLight, JavaFX, et al are all worthy competitors) – but that doesn’t take anything away from an extraordinary gesture on their part.
Thank you guys.
I beg your pardon but could you tell when the Adobe Flash Catalyst will go on public beta?
Thank you for your great post, Lee! I have just been unemployed in Europe, actually in Hungary and due to the global economic crisis I hope that this free Flex Builder restricted license will help me (and help people kind of me) to learn new skill and expertise in the field of flash technology. I am very interested in flash catalyst and the first public beta release of flex 4 too. Shortly: THANK YOU ADOBE!
PS: Would you like to make a short tut about the connection between the flash-flex and the new as3 client library of facebook platform for us?
Jason,
I applied without a student ID and received it, all that needs to be shown is that you’re currently a student (my student ID doesn’t show any of that information) so I just took a screenshot of the internal website that lists my current courses. That should work fine.
Wow, thanks Adobe!
does this work outside of the U.S.?
Yes both of these programs are available in all countries of the world.
That is extreemly nice, and clever of Adobe.
Thanks Lee and Adobe. Applied for free Flex. I don’t know Flex, if i get licence i will study
Thanks Lee,
I’am just a Baccalaureate student can i have it?
PS: Would you like to make a short tut about the connection between the flash-flex and the new as3 client library of facebook platform for us please ?
Can I apply more than once, if my first attempt fails?
I don’t have a scanner right now, so I’m planning on sending photos of my ID instead.
The photos’ qualities are not very good, and I can barely make out the text.
Should I try and send the photos, or is it wiser to send a scanned copy?
They won’t give it to you if your course isn’t relivant. They’ve just told me that because my course didn’t realte to needing it I didn’t qualify.
Do designers qualify as well??
I am a designer / developer who is (thankfully) employed and completely interested in Flex and completely impressed with the generosity of Adobe.
While I would love a copy of Flex I am employed and I want to encourage others like me to support our unemployed friends as well as Adobe by not abusing these incredibly generous programs.
I know a few folks who qualify for one or the other of these opportunities and I wish them the best in their search for gainful employment. More power to them and more power to Adobe!
If you are not associated with an educational institution or do not find yourself unemployed (thankfully) but you still want to learn how to create Flex projects (MXML+AS3 authoring) then go download the free open-source tool FlashDevelop at…
http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4374
(note: You have to be running Windows on a PC or in something like parallels on a mac to install this.)
At the minimum you can start going through the Adobe tutorials (as well as Lees tutorials here) and start tooling up!
Thank you Lee and thank you Adobe!
Steve
I’m surprised no-one heard of this also. I’ve mentioned it on campus at school and people seem to be aware that it’s free for students, though most of them aren’t in to it enough to go through the hassel of making copies and sending them to adobe.
I’ve been using a free copy since the week it was announced that there would be a free student version, and I’ve gotten quite a bit out of it since then. (and learned a lot)
Never heard of this, but this is so awesome!!
Thank you adobe
Hello there! After 24 hours I’ve got a free flex builder license from Adobe. Thanks Lee and Adobe!
My first attempt failed because i sent a screenshot of my faculty’s intern website. The second attempt was succesfull because i sent a scanned copy of my faculty-ID, thanks Adobe!
I’m a little sad I hadn’t heard about it sooner – does anyone know when the program started? – as I’ve only just finished my dissertation and it would’ve been useful to use the Flex IDE for writing AS3 classes. But I can back-up the report that FlashDevelop is a great alternative.
I got a license within a couple of days, but Flex rejects it, saying it’s invalid. Did this happen to anyone else? I replied to the email message in which I got the license, but I don’t know if anyone reads mail sent to that address.
Problem solved. If you’re using a Mac, make sure you’re installing Flex Builder with an admin account or access to one.
Hi lee,
I enjoyed seeing you in london
I’m maintaining open source libraries for flash on my blog. Several services and softwares owner helped me by sending me license and free access to their services.
Anyway, is Adobe supporting open source libraries related to their products? Is there any way I can fill a form or ask Adobe a Flex license (even other license, I’m basically using the one at work)?
Thanks.
Romu
Where does one go to find a few of these unemployed developers?
I need someone to do some rapid (and inexpensive) prototyping.
Would love to give consideration to talented folks who came in under this program.
Hi. Master Lee: Shall this apply to Flash Builder Beta
?
Hi:
I got the education copy of Flex under the program and am trying to build some data visualizations. When I compile the application I get a watermark on top of all charts. Is there a way to hide this watermark? All help in this matter would be highly appreciated.
Hi !
I get a problem with my FlashBuilder Key , I send my student id , a month ago ! And until now i didn’t receive anything ?
Can anyone help me with this ?
Thank you !
