New update available for Flash CS4!

I am very happy to announce that today we shipped a free update to Flash CS4 which addresses most of the issues that people have been having with it. Many of you gave some very honest feedback in this post and I want you to know that it was instrumental in getting this update out. The Flash team has been working around the clock to fix these issues so I want to give a big shout out to them for their tireless work. Product manager Richard Galvan has all the details on the bugs fixed in this update. Go and get the update and please let me know how it works for you.

Commentary

  1. Unreality says:

    Flash 10.0.2 failed to install

  2. Dave Gamez says:

A very much expected and appreciated update the fonts issue made us go nuts in Grupo W, a big thanks to the Flash team for the effort.

  3. mpc says:

    sucefully updated ;)

  4. How come the Adobe Updater doesn’t find it? People are telling each other about this update through email and twitter, but shouldn’t it just appear in the standard way?

  5. Phil says:

me too “Flash 10.0.2 failed to install’ as well as media encoder cs4

  6. Hunter says:

YES! It no longer (temporarily)freezes my computer when I click “Export for Actionscript”! :D That was probably the thing I was most annoyed at.

  7. Great Disney character as file icon by the way. Lol, how did that happen?

  8. remeard says:

I’ve been updated. But I’m disappointed while loading old fla files are still crash; And now, Writing script on both Flash IDE and TextMate will cause problems too, while click the \Go to Source\ button on the IDE.
Or maybe is not the TextMate + Flash IDE fault. I don’t know.

  9. Michal Polkowski says:

I was hoping You could solve problem with Flash CS4 on mac os x.
But after installing this update I still have my Flash IDE consuming ~20% CPU with 5 files opened while idling in background.

Any idea if its only my problem? I googled something about it and it seems its not.

Anyway, thanks for the update :)

  10. Little problem on Macintosh
I have a Macintosh OSX 10.5.7, when I tried to install the update, I saw an error message showing a problem with Safari (4.0 Beta). You must uninstall the Beta version of Safari to install the update and It works fine :-)

  11. Nabeel says:

thanks Lee i was waiting for something like that for a long time
I hope this update fix my problems

  12. The install went very smooth. So far so good with stability. Thanks to the Flash team for the update.

I do still have one issue that I was hoping would be fixed. I’ve got a project with basically three buttons, each one loads an animation and/or some text. One of the animations is fairly long (2 minutes). If I open up that animation movie clip and scrub through the timeline, I don’t hear the audio. If I publish, everything works fine. If I create a new fla and copy the animation into it, I can scrub the timeline and hear the audio. So when I’m finished with the animation, I have to copy the movie clip from the new fla and paste it into the larger project. I’ve got 3 other large fla’s that are set up the exact same way and they all exhibit the same behavior. It works to copy/paste, but it’s a little clunky and makes it more difficult to track changes.

  13. David Jumeau says:

I did not have any problems updating. Try “Help/updates” on the main menu.

  14. Bananaman says:

I was just wondering, in what language is Flash CS4 and the other Adobe products written?

  15. Freddy says:

Hi Lee, good to see an update, that’s a huge list of fixed bugs, none of the ones I submitted though, and weird enough, I haven’t experienced any of the bugs in the fixed list… anyway, it’s a massive list for a release product, obviously there is a problem.

And… “fix as many more as we can for a future version of Flash”?

Maybe next time we pay Adobe for the app until in a future version of Flash the bugs are minimal?, I mean… not a single client I work for would pay for an unfinished product and be happy to wait for fixes until the next time I milk the cow

  16. I do install sucefuly :) That’s great.

  17. lee says:

    Glad to see it!

  18. J Bunting says:

Downloaded and installed. I can barely contain how excited I am that all that stuff got fixed. Much better to have a ton of stuff fixed all at once than little things here and there with updates constantly. Thanks Adobe!

  19. kenn says:

    Thx for the 411!

  20. Jobe Makar says:

We all appreciate the huge list of fixes! I did notice though that ‘show in library’ stopped working as soon as I installed this update.
    1) select a movie click instance
    2) right-click and select ‘show in library’
    3) witness nothing happening

  21. csomak says:

I just downloaded it. I’m in the middle of an amfphp using project. The Flash Player safety stopped the debugging, because it tried to connect to the internet. Not good :(
The other things should be fine.. I had 5 minutes to test it. But this is annoying.

  22. chris says:

Disappointed. All those bug fixes, but no fixes for the most common and annoying, time consuming bugs. Arrgh! when will the next update be? this is killing me! :(

  23. khaled says:

good but the actionscript editor in flash i wish it will be faster
also a little problem with the text tool when i select it flash stops responding for 2 or 3 second than continue to work

  24. Martin says:

The bug while scrolling in the font list when adding a textfield is still there…

    Flash CS4 mac

  25. Ed says:

One thing I found is that sometimes selecting a dynamic textfield will pause a bit in CS4 but playback on timeline is actually smoother in CS4 than CS3.

  26. andy says:

I was hoping this would add Flex as the actionscript editor. Dang!
    ;)

  27. khaled says:

yeah andy i wish they they put the flex actionscript editor into flash

  28. Pierre says:

How come the filesize for the mac update is so much bigger? Are there so many mac-related bugs??

  29. Stunt says:

    i update fine
but there some problem with 3D rotation tools
and it not work correctly. can not create real 3d rotation with this tool
but rotation with actionscript is correct
    I back to 10.0.0 with AIR 1.5

  30. funkyjones says:

    Updated allright.

    Nice flashblog btw

  31. mpc says:

Hi, I love the update except one think, I have english Flash CS4 on a polish OS X leopard (I am from Poland) when I updated my Flash CS4 the compiler started to speak polish, is there a way to turn this off? I want my english compiler back ;(

  32. LeodinAS says:

    Updated successfully.

But I cannot find much progress in this update.

  33. Elliot Geno says:

That fixed a bunch of bugs… but there are at least three times as many bugs yet to fix.

Hopefully they will get it right soon. We shouldn’t have to wait until CS5 to get this program working the way it should!

  34. Ravikanth says:

I’m not able to Install the Updates…It asking me to uninstall Adobe Bridge Application..

  35. Manuel says:

I installed the update when it came out…. flash works better BUT there´s still a big issue…. the fonts management is really VERY SLOW, I tried to work with this CS4 and its update for 2 months….. BUT…. it really got me tired! I went back last week to CS3…!!!

The Problem: everything works fast now BUT when I click the “text tool” Flash Freezes for 5 to 10 seconds, when I try to select a different font flash freezes a lot to read it, it impossible to work that way!

The Solution: Macromedia, buy flash again!!! your programmers are better than adobe´s!

    Cheers
    Manu

  36. matthew moose says:

When you make a very small shape, it’s blocky and you can’t edit the curves. The selection box and the vectors when you use the subselection tool are all offset, down and to the right, always. The new motion tweens make it extremely difficult to make an ease in and ease out. When you use the armature for more than say, 50 frames, it goes so slow its almost unusable. The armature thing uses the new motion tween structure, but doesn’t let you even use the motion editor, so you can forget having any sense of control over the easing like with the graph editor. Sometimes the onion skinning tool just doesn’t work at all. Sometimes when you have multiple instances of the same symbol and you edit one inside, the others are not updated until you back out of that symbol. This is a ridiculous amount of bugs and bad design flaws. And this is just my first week using it. I don’t understand how a new version of something that originally worked great can have so many new flaws. I haven’t used the 3D thing much yet, but i cant wait to see what wonderful bugs I’ll find in there. That new update made it faster, but its still barely usable.

  37. matthew moose says:

and WHY does the onion skin keep shutting down?????? it worked perfectly for every single other version of flash, and now i can hardly use it because everytime i move anything with it on, it stops working until i lock all the layers, unlock them, then turn the onion skin back on. why why why?? its not fair.

  38. Junior says:

Flash CS4 Professional has some major issues with handling fonts and I don’t see anyone addressing this! I don’t have time to wait 15 minutes while Flash CS4 Pro decides if it will actually render the text in my text box after I spend the time typing it all in. I plan on calling out to California this week and finding out 1) if there are still people interested in customer service at Adobe and 2) if I can have a license for Flash CS3 Pro as this was a mush more stable product with none of the problems that I have encountered with Flash CS4 Pro. Is anyone listening out there?!?

  39. Gabriele says:

I cannot install the update. I have Flash CS4 10.0.2 and I work on Mac OSX 10.5.8. It says that it cannot install the updates therefore ask me to press quit and nothing happens. Can someone advise me how to go ahead with this as I am working on a big project and I need to see if this will fix few problems, most of all, I cannot scroll down the page in the Actionscript panel and cannot adjust the script accordingly.

    Many thanks

    Gabriele

  40. patrickosin says:

I installed this update. Nothing help to the superb slow performance problem. We have colleagues who are traveling around with their ThinkPad T400/T400s. They all reported the same problems and downgraded to CS3.
We wanna call Adobe for offical refund of our newly purchased CS4 master piece.

  41. Renee says:

I’m also having the same problem as #40. The onion skin is very hard to work with in CS4. Why do objects have to be hidden and unlocked for the Onion skin to work? That is very counterintuitive if I’m animating a character that has to interact with it’s surroundings and I can’t see those surrounding while I animate. It’s frustrating. Hope there’s an update soon.

  42. Flasher says:

I have installed Flash CS4 update, but after using Flash CS4, the cpu usage is 50% when select tool to ToolBox…

  43. StockFuel says:

real slow for me too… come on Adobe!

  44. Farhan Zia says:

    Hello Adobe Team,

Why adobe flash cs4 takes long time to install. Sometime it takes 2 to 3 hours to install only flash cs4. Is there any solution, which can reduce the installation time. please help us in this regard.

    Regards,

    Farhan Zia

    Mumbai

  45. Abbie says:

Has anyone had a problem with Flash CS4 scrambling/enlarging text significantly when publishing an animated gif file? Are there any fixes for this?

    Thank you.

  46. daniel says:

i just cannot believe that the major bug with the onion skinning (see comment #40) was already reported in may 2009 and is still not fixed by jan 2010! flash cs4 is completely unusable for frame by frame animation with this bug not fixed. dear flash team, when are you planning to get this finally done?!?

  47. Lenin says:

Disappointed. All those bug fixes,Onion skin is not working & Object visible in blank key frame error alos not fixed

  48. kame says:

Mac OS X 10.6.2 – Flash CS4 still can’t be handled by Spaces… sometimes different windows are on different Spaces forming a infinite loop. Welcome to the future.
Also Flash crashes if things get too complex (>100 mb assets (on a 8 Core Mac Pro with 8GB RAM!!))
This happens EVER DAY since I bought the Master Edition.

Please… find a GUI that works with OSX!!

    Flash CS4 10.0.2

  49. Suzanne says:

I have installed the update, but Flash still freezes in the exact same place each time. I am using Digital Classroom to learn Flash and I can’t get past this one spot, it freezes every time. Is it Vista? Is it the fact that my computer keeps telling me that I don’t have permission to save in this location, even though I am the only user? HELP!!! I can’t learn when I am stuck in the same spot.

  50. Vlad says:

For people having problems installing the update you have to uninstall the previous installed Adobe Flash Player ActiveX if you have 2 entries in remove programs.

  51. Morf says:

Hey Lee, hope FITC was a blast.
This problem has been posted to Richard Galvan, but no response:
When setting armature poses or transforming rigs, the rig (bone) pivots shift ever-so slightly in relation to the symbols attached; the cumulative effect is to destroy the original rig. The (arduous) work-around of progressively finessing the rig by shifting the pivots back only results in “floating limbs”.

    Any suggestions?

  52. Chrirs says:

I’ve had huge performance problems with Flash CS4 running on a powerful PC (Win7). I “fixed” the problem by changing some of the compatibility settings. To do this, right-click on the Flash application icon (or shortcut in the start menu), select the compatibility tab, tick the boxes for:

    1. disable visual themes
    2. Disable desktop composition
    3. Disable display scaling

Not sure if these are the same in Vista but certainly in Win7 it is now very very fast inc text handing (which was nearly impossible to use before)

    Hope this helps someone

    Cheers

  53. Tarik says:

#40 thanks for the tip on locking and unlocking layer then turning onion skin on. It’s mind boggling why onion skin doesn’t just work, but at least this is a work around so i’m not totally stuck.

  54. Chelsea says:

I am also having troubles with the onion skinning problem which seemed to only arrive after I agreed to install updates for CS4.

Furthermore I am having troubles using the Adobe Flash CS4 Professional Update (10.0.2) update saying cannot install, please press quit button.

  55. Valerie says:

I still have the problem that a previous commenter complained about in the original version( http://theflashblog.com/?p=693#comment-540722 ). When I open FLAs created in CS3 by my coworkers (or by me when I had CS3), the text is in a different place. This basically means that I can’t open and publish FLAs made by them, and vice versa, because a lot of our text sits on narrow background rectangles, and it’ll either be hanging above or below those now.
    I want to downgrade!

  56. Kaleb Wyman says:

Flash CS4 killed key command access to the Smooth tool, previously assignable through Modify > Shape > Smooth in nearly all previous versions of Flash, but was replaced by Advanced Smooth which does not perform the same operation as the Smooth tool. That menu option has always been the only way to assign a keystroke to the Smooth tool.

I have been doing vector illustrations using a Wacom tablet with Flash for years, and my digital workflow depends heavily on keystroke access to the Smooth tool, to trigger smoothing with a single click on the side of my stylus when portions of my vector painted lines are selected with the Selection Tool.

This code regression has forced me back into the dark ages of vector painting in Flash CS3 and below, since only those versions still permit me to assign a custom keystroke for the Smooth tool through Modify > Shape > Smooth.

Any chance this oversight has been fixed (or will be fixed) in Flash CS5?

(Note: There is also no way to assign a keyboard shortcut to the Smooth tool through custom keyboard shortcuts of the Tools Panel because it’s not in the list, but that’s always been the case with Flash for some reason, probably because it’s a contextual tool that is only visible when a shape is selected on stage, but it would be a logical addition to add it to the list of available tools for keystroke assignment.)
